Excellent work
which sheds a great deal of light on what was a cloudy
subject. The xiv pp. at the beginning contain an
introductory essay by Rui Vieira Nery, "Para uma
bibliografia crítica da edição musical portuguesa". The
initial 98 pp. of the main text contain a detailed study of
all aspects of music publishing in Portugal during the
final years of the "old regime". This includes an index of
names, localities and themes (pp. 90-8). A bibliography of
manuscript and secondary sources occupies pp. 99-111. Pp.
113-91 contain "Apêndice A: Editores de Música que
exerceram actividade em Portugal nos finais do Antigo
Regime (1750-1834)". This includes illustrations from
musical engravings in the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade
de Coimbra, and the Biblioteca Nacional, Lisboa (pp.
175-84), as well as maps of Lisbon (2) and Porto (2),
showing the locations of music publishers and distributors
at different times (pp. 185-91). Pp. 193-399 contain
"Apêndice B: Catálogo de Edições de Música Impressas em
Portugal nos finais do Antigo Regime (1750-1834)". There

Beautifully
illustrated description of the treasures in the Torre do
Tombo, Portugal's national archive; it includes fine color
photographs of manuscripts from the twelfth through the
twentieth centuries. The Torre do Tombo also owns the only
complete copy of a Gutenberg Bible in the Iberian
Peninsula. Out of print. We have one copy remaining in
stock.

A useful
reference work, despite some minor faults due no doubt to a
certain bibliographical naiveté (for example, Francisco
Tavares de Brito's rare Itinerario
geografico, while it
bears a Sevilha imprint, was certainly not
printed in that
city). Perhaps related to this point, curiously there is no
mention whatsoever of either the Bibliografia
do período colonial or the
Bibliographia
Brasiliana of Borba de
Morais. On the other hand, the "Supplementos" of "Obras
colectivas, textos anónimos e históricos," and "Documentos
jurídicos e políticos" (pp. 469-502) are of substantial
interest, as is much of the main body of text.

this important work, still highly useful, originally
published in Lisbon, 1926. It describes 1,312
sixteenth-century books printed in Portugal, with
locations, collations and bibliographical references.
Entries are arranged by printer; there are indexes of
authors, titles and printing places. The paper of the
original edition is highly acidic, and copies are beginning
to decay; this facsimile edition is printed on much better
quality paper, which will last much longer.

The author is
one of the foremost authorities on the history of early
printing in Portugal. Of his Origens da
imprensa em Portugal (Portuguese
edition 1981, French edition 1983), F.J. Norton wrote,
"Splendid book … I have been greatly impressed by the
completeness of its information and by its concision of
expression, excluding all useless speculation." Two more
volumes were projected: volume II to cover 1536-1768,
volume III, 1768 to the present. They have yet to appear.

Important
reference work. A total of five volumes are planned. While
pre-1601 printing in Portugal has been studied and
described rather thoroughly, the seventeenth century is
less well known by far. This first volume contains 1,571
entries in alphabetical order, each with a line by line
transcription of the title page, collation by pages and
leaves, details about preliminary and supplementary leaves,
bibliographical citations, and Biblioteca Nacional call
numbers for works held by that institution. When the title
is not present in the Biblioteca Nacional, there are
references to other libraries in Portugal which own a copy.
There is a brief introduction by Fernanda Maria Guedes de
Campos (pp. ix-xii), and an essay on the late author by
Manuela D. Domingos (pp. xiii-xxxiv). The fifth and final
volume will be comprised of indexes.

Excellent work,
unfortunately little-known outside of the picturesque town
of Sobral de Monte Agraço, situated between Bucelas and
Torres Vedras, about 50 kilometers north of Lisbon. The
founder of the house of Sobral was Joaquim Inácio da Cruz
Sobral, 1º Morgado do Sobral (also after 1768 2º Morgado da
Alagoa? 1725-1781; born and died in Lisbon). He had an
engraved bookplate, and we have seen evidence that he was a

with some text—and herein lies the volume's worth: to those
studying scripts and illumination, a detailed physical
description is no substitute for actually seeing a bit of

secondary authors, titles, printers, and a chronology. This

limited (to only six bibliographies), erratic and rather
flawed: e.g. the original edition of Borba de Moraes was
used exclusively instead of the greatly improved 1983
second edition; NUC

Electricidade, Lisbon. Each of the 100 volumes exhibited is
meticulously catalogued. The author of the excellent
introductory matter is presently working on a more
elaborate study of the Craesbeecks, who printed and
published books in Portugal from the late sixteenth to the
late seventeenth century. The founder of the dynasty in
Portugal, Pedro Crasebeeck, or Pieter van Craesbeeck (ca.
1572-1632), had apprenticed with Plantin in Antwerp.

typographical standpoint, this work, designed by Manuel
Rodrigues Pereira da Silva, is one of the most delicious

We have had the
opportunity to use this work, and can report that it is
indeed far superior to any Portuguese dictionary which came
before. The original eighteenth-century dictionary of the
Academy, while a most worthwhile work of grand erudition,
only got as far as the letter "A" (in one large folio
volume). All subsequent Portuguese dictionaries have been
influenced by this; the present one is no exception: the
letter "A" occupies pp. 1-449. Nevertheless, this
dictionary takes a modern approach, listing many words
commonly used but not found in any other dictionary. It
even recognizes the expression "pá" [second of three
meanings] when used as a "Forma vocativa que serve para
chamar a atenção . . . "; as a "Forma coloquial usada como
bordão"; and as an "Expressão com valor de interjeição que
serve para manifestar decepção." Preface by José Vitorino

This volume,
co-published with the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa,
deals with sixteenth-century Portuguese authors and
anonymous works from Abarbanel to Amato Lusitano. The first
two volumes, dealing with the fifteenth century, were
published 1941–1944. Many more volumes were contemplated,
but the project languished. Apparently a significant
portion of this third volume was printed some years ago,
while other parts were printed more recently; to the best
of our knowledge, it was published only in 1992.
Volumes I and II are out of print. However, we have several
sets in stock, and while they last we can offer them for
$125.00. They are an outstanding contribution to
bibliography in Portugal. The first 300 or so pages of
volume I describe incunables printed in Portugal, with
bibliographical references and collations. Volume II is on
Portuguese authors published abroad, and describes many
later editions as well as incunables. A number of works
deal with early voyages and discoveries, including America,
while others are of great interest as Sephardic Judaica or
Hebraica. The illustrations include reproductions of title
pages, pages of text, and watermarks.

This catalogue
of 100 incunables in the library of the Academy of
Sciences, Lisbon, contains a preface, introductory study,
and bibliographical notes by José V. de Pina Martins. The
actual catalogue is by Júlio Caio Velloso, who provides an
introduction, bibliographical notes, and indices. For each
item is given collation, foliation, and bibliographical
citations; transcriptions of titles, colophons, and other
key matter; and descriptions of copy-specific features such
as provenance, binding, manuscript notes, etc. There are
indexes of principal authors; secondary authors;
chronology; printers, publishers and booksellers; places of
printing and printers; titles; ownership marks and
autograph signatures; and plates. There is also a table of
concordances. The library boasts a 1462 Latin Bible printed
by Fust & Schoeffer and a Hebrew Torah printed by
Elieser Toledano, Lisbon 1491, on vellum. Surprisingly, it
has only one other incunable printed in Portugal (a
Cataldus Siculus printed by Valentim Fernandes, Lisbon
1500), and only two works printed in Spain.

"Romanization" (i.e., the transliteration into the Roman
alphabet), of the Chinese language spoken in the final

constitutes a milestone in the development of Chinese
studies.

facsimile reproductions of eight different and varied

originals are rare, some are almost impossible to obtain
for any price.
