Novella featuring two men, from two different generations, with differing views about war, but the same love of Moçambique. The author was born in Vinhais, 1942. A retired army officer, he served in Angola (1969-1971) and Moçambique (1973-1975). In 1980 he earned an undergraduate degree in history at the Faculdade de Letras, Universidade de Lisboa, and in 1990 he was awarded a master's degree in contemporary history of Portugal by the same institution. From 1993 to 2007 he was director of the Arquivo Histórico Militar. With Carlos Matos Gomes he has published Anos da guerra colonial (2009); Portugal e a Grande Guerra (2003); and Guerra Colonial: Angola, Guiné, Moçambique (1997; 3rd ed., 2001). He is also the author of Portugal e a Grande Guerra, 1914-1918 (2006); História de uma conspiração: Sinel de Cordes e 28 de Maio (2001); and Diário da Liberdade (1995).

A very detailed work on the bishops, priests, dioceses, and clergy in Portugal and the Portuguese Empire between 1495–1777. The subject ranges from the various titles of the chapters: "O Processo de Provimento Episcopal: A Norma"; "O(s) Modelo(s) de Bispo: Pastor, Pai, Santo, Político e Ilustrado"; "As <<Feituras>> do Rei: a Escolha do Episcopado"; "Rumos da Selecção dos Antístites e Feições do Episcopado: uma aproximação conjuntural". There are also useful tools throughout the text, such as a diagram in the chapter titled, "As <<Feituras>> do Rei: A Escolha do Episcopado" which shows the five-step process of how a bishop was appointed. Not only does this work draw on important historical information, but also with details on politics, government, episcopacy and Spain's influence in Portugal during this period.

The book is divided into six parts and is comprised of interviews by João Céu e Silva with José Saramago, as well as with friends of Saramago and also includes Saramago's Nobel Prize speech. At the end of the work is a bibliography of Saramago's work. The interviews are very detailed and offer Saramago's insight on many diverse topics from the Portuguese Carnation Revolution of 1974, detailed answers to questions posed on the complicated characters in his writings, to his thoughts on the film Blindness (2008) based on his work Ensaio sobre a Cegueira. This is the third book in a series made in this interview-format dedicated to providing a detailed biography of different Portuguese authors. The two other books in this series are: Uma Longa Viagem com Álvaro Cunhal (Edições Asa, 2005) and Uma Longa Viagem com Miguel Torga (2007).

A completely new and revised edition of this most important chronicle, with more than 1,500 explanatory notes. Three previous editions of 1644, 1899–1900, and 1915 have been studied, as have 9 known manuscript versions in Portuguese collections. It was produced using the following methodology: 1) modernization and harmonization of the orthography; 2) punctuation and paragraphs have been changed (i.e. shorter sentences and paragraphs), making the text easier to understand; 3) all archaic words are maintained; 4) verbs such as "ser" and "haver" are maintained as in the original text, despite the fact that modern usage might substitute "estar, manter–se, existir" for the first, and "ter, existir" for the second; 5) abbreviations are maintained, but explained in the notes; 6) geographical place names are also maintained, and explained in the notes; 7) various difficult expressions are left as in the original, and explained in the notes.
