The author has published four previous volumes of poetry, China de jade (1997), China de seda (2001), Terra de musgo e alegria (2005), and China de Lótis (2006), as well as three volumes on Chinese history: two in collaboration with Zhang Weimin and Roderich Ptak, Sinica Lusitana I and II (Fundação Oriente, 2000-2003), and D. Frei Alexandre de Gouveia, Bispo de Pequim (Universidade Católica, 2004). He has also written Diário da Guiné (Guerra e Paz, 2007). Four of his translations of books from the Chinese have been published by the Instituto Cultural de Macau, one of which was awarded the Grande Prémio de Tradução, 1991, by the Pen Club Português and the Associação Portuguesa de Tradutores.

Born Porto (the son of Transmontanos), 1975, the author was (and may still be) a member of the administration of the Fundação Eugénio de Andrade. He has collaborated in the review Cadernos de Serrúbia, and is literary director of the literary review Aguasfurtas. He has also written for the Jornal de notícias in its section on culture. His first two publications were books of poems, Antigo e primeiro (sonetos) (2002) and Berçário (2004), both published by Quasi Editores. His third was a play, Não há mais que nascer e morrer, published by Edições Mortas (2004).
