Excellent scientific study of the bird population of Portugal, including 446 species of birds. For each species there is a half page color illustration, a half page of text giving its scientific and common names, worldwide and European distribution, distribution within Portugal, and an estimate of the national population. The facing page for each entry contains maps which show both distribution and abundance of the species throughout continental Portugal, the Azores, and Madeira Islands. There are many more maps and plans in the preliminary and supplementary pages.

The author, born in Lisbon, 1941, ceramic artist and painter, has been working on a historical dictionary of Cascais. She is the daughter of the distinguished obstetrician gynecologist Salvador Villarinho Pereira (1879-1948).
