Detective novel. The author was born in Vinhais, 1960. He worked for the Polícia Judiciária as a criminal investigator in the Homicide section, joining in the investigations of some of the most sensational crimes which took place in Greater Lisbon, such as those associated with "skinheads" and "O Estripador". His first book, O caso da Rua Direita (2005), a detective novel, was followed by O homem da Carbonária (2006), and the detective novel Estranha forma de Vida (2007).

Stories set in the Southeast of the Alentejo. The author was born in Colos, concelho de Odemira, 1941. She has colaborated in Poetrix do Brasil, and worked for two years at the regional newspaper Tribuna do povo in Seixal. At the time this volume appeared she was collaborating with a regular column on the Southeast Alentejo in the Diário do Sul.

The author of these stories, an ophthalmologist, was practicing at the Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon at the time this volume appeared. She has a master's degree in bio-ethics. Her first book of short stories, Esgares e sorrisos, was awarded the Prémio Revelação SOPEAM, 2002, and the Prémio Novos Autores Portuguese for 2002 by the IPLB. Another collection of stories, Só me falta ser viúva, was published by Prefácio in 2004.

This brief novel or novella is a history of four generations of the Palma Lobo family. They spent time in Moçambique, Angola, Lisbon, the Alentejo and Brazil. The author's first novel Amor à 1ª vista, went through three editions between March and April 1999. His detective novella with a comic touch, O fanático do sushi, was published in book form in 2000. His third work of fiction, Os Cavaleiros de S. João Baptista (2004), a detective novel mixing crime, love and sex with the search for hidden treasures of the Order of the Templars in the region of Tomar, was about an ancient relic thought to have been stolen, and secrets about the History of Portugal. His novel set in Lisbon, 1941, Enquanto Salazar dormia (first published April 2006; the seventh edition appeared in October the same year), based on the supposed memoirs of Jack Gil Mascarenhas, a Luso-British spy, sent on a mission to dismantle the networks of Nazi espionage active throughout Portugal, recounted 50 years after the fact, is said to have sold 30,000 copies. It has been published in Brazil and Poland. Born Lisbon, 1967, the author holds an M.A. in International Relations from Columbia University. He has worked as a journalist, contributing to Independente for eleven years (1991-2001?), and to the Diário de notícias during 1997. From its inception in 2001 he was editor-in-chief of the review Maxmen; at the time this volume was published he was still in this post.

Rui Manuel Amaral was born in Porto, 1973. He is literary coordinator of the review Agusfurtadas. This is his first book. It appears to be a collection of short and very short stories, but may very well be a novella.

First published 1981. Baptista-Bastos, born in Lisbon, 1934, has published ten volumes of fiction, the first nine of which have had multiple editions. His A colina de cristal (1987; 4 eds.), was awarded the Prémio Pen Club as well as the Prémio Cidade de Lisboa. He has also been awarded the Grande Prémio da Crítica, the Grande Prémio da Crónica da APE, and the Prémio de Crónica João Carreira Bom. He has published at least four volumes of essays, and six of journalism (interviews which appeared in the press, etc.). He began working as a journalist for O século at age 19, later spending 23 years at Diário popular.

Novel set in Lisbon during the 1930s. The author was born in Amadora, 1948. He fought in the colonial wars in Moçambique, and while there collaborated in various newspapers, such as Notícias de Lourenço Marques, República, O diário, and Diário popular. In 1973 he was awarded first prize in a short story contest held by the Diário popular. Garcia Barreto has written a number of children's books, and has also published scholarly works about Portuguese literature for children, the most significant of which was Dicionário de literatura infantil portuguesa (2002). His juvenile novel Rubens e a companhia do espanto em o caso da mitra desaparecida (2005) received the Prémio Literário de Sintra—Adolfo Simões Müller, for children's and juvenile literature. Author of several novels and collections of short stories for adults as well, his A malta da Rua dos Plátanos (1981) was translated into Russian. The author's novella À sombra das acácias vermelhas (Roma Editora, 2006), was set in Moçambique during the colonial wars.

Set in the years of the Estado Novo, about an unusual woman, this is the author's first novel. It was first published June 2008 (said to have been in a run of 4,000 copies). We have no information about the second edition, which must have appeared in either June or early July. This third edition appeared in July (the print run is said to have been 3,000 copies). The author was born in Lisbon, 1954. She has collaborated in the weekly newspaper Semanário, was one of the founders of the review Máxima, and has also written for Lux and Notícias magazine. She has worked extensively in television. In 2001 she published Luísa, a collection of essays (at least two editions).

First published by Caminho, 1988. The author of this novella was born in Lisbon, 1936. He had a career as a radio journalist, later moving to television and cinematography. He also wrote A borboleta na gaiola (Vega, 1984).

The author has had published at least ten small books, mostly by Black Son and Edições Mortas. These are for the most part poems, but include at least two plays, a volume of literary theory, and at least two volumes of short fiction. He has also written for the literary supplement of Diário de Lisboa, and for the Dutch review Pose.

The author is Professor Catedrático de Psiquiatria, and the Universidade do Porto. He has published in the area of the convergence of psychiatry and psychology with culture and values. He has also worked on drug addiction, and was at the forefront of opposition to the dam at Foz Côa. A founder of the "Portugal Plural" movement, he was active in student movements of the 1960s, and lived many years in exile in Switzerland. He has been awarded the Grã-Cruz da Ordem da Liberdade. The present stories are said to have been written and left "na gaveta" since 1977. Based on the author's experiences, they appear to constitute his first volume of fiction.

The author of this unconventional collection of short stories was born in Lisbon, 1961. As of ca. 2006 he was working in England, near Stonehenge. He has published books on computer programming. His first novel, O segredo do cavaleiro, was published by Oficina do Livro in 2006.

Fictitious memoirs of António Pereira Vicente, who in pursuit of his military career accompanied the mad Queen D. Maria II and the Prince Regent, D. João (later D. João VI of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves), departing Lisbon 27 November 1807, arriving first in Bahia in January 1808, then moving on to Rio de Janeiro. Said on the publisher's belt to be the account of "Um principe dominado por uma rainha louca e por uma mulher perversa. Os sonhos e as incertezas do nascimento da nação brasileira." The author's book of poems, Sobre retratos (2008), was awarded the Prémio de Poesia Nuno Júdice, 2007, by the Câmara Municipal de Aveiro. José Jorge Letria's A dúvida melódica was awarded the Prémio de Poesia Cidade da Amadora, 1993. Born in Cascais in 1951, he has published at least 34 volumes of poetry, a number of which have also been awarded literary prizes, including the Prémio Eça de Queiroz–Município de Lisboa (twice), the Prémio Gulbenkian, and others. See Machado, Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, p. 266. His historical novella, Morro bem, salvem a pátria (2005), was set around the assassination of Sidónio Pais at the Rossio Station in Lisbon, December 1918. From January 1994 until January 2002 Letria was Vereador da Cultura for the Câmara Municipal de Cascais.

Novella of love lost and regained. This appears to be the author's first solely written and separately published work of longer fiction. Diana Mendonça was born in Cascais, 1980. She was a photographer's model, and journalist, becoming director of a feminine review. She has written Receitas de ópera, and Receitas de contos de fadas de Hans Christian Andersen. She won a national competition for short story writing, and at the time this volume appeared, was president of the Jovens Escritores de Portugal. She has lived in Paris, where she began writing her novella Espero por ti em Paris (Oficina do Livro, 2006; written in collaboration with David Marle), in which Philippe and Carolina decide to visit Paris. It is the first published work of longer fiction for both authors.

Short fiction? Julieta Monginho was born in Lisbon, 1958. Juízo perfeiro (1996), her first novel, has had a second edition. Her second novel was A paixão segundo os infiés (1998). She published a third novel À tua espera, in 2000. Her fouth novel, in the form of a diary, Onde está J.? was published in 2002. She also published a collection of essays with a decidedly literary bent Dicionário dos livros sensíveis (2000).

The author of this long short love story or brief novella, born Vila Nova de Gaia, 1935, participated in the Centro Ramalho Ortigão in the 1950s. In 1963 he published his first book, A cidade adversa. He also published A cidade ocupada pela poesia (Editora Peregrinação, 1983), O poeta escondido (1998), and Voltar a Gaia (2000). As of ca. 2002 he was writing weekly essays for eight regional newspapers.

Novel which begins in the Summer of 1981, about a dispute between two families over love and fortune. The author was born in Calw, described as a small city in the Black Forest. He came to live in Portugal at age six. This appears to be his first book.

First published May 2008; this second edition appeared later the same month. The Angolan–born author was awarded the Prémio Camões for the totality of his literary output. The Prémio Camões has been described by his former publisher as "the most important literary prize in the Portuguese language." In the 1940s, Mercês Perestrello is declared insane and separated from her children. In the 1960s, the twins Maria Teresa and Maria Luísa travel different roads in search of happiness. Forty years later, the cousins Leonor and Naná discover secrets never imagined. The author has had several best-selling books among at least five novels, and three collections of essays. Her collection of short and shorter romantic pieces, Vou contar-te um segredo (2006), was published in an initial edition of 25,000 copies. She has also written two plays and two screenplays. Her work has been published in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Lithuania and Brazil.

This previously unpublished novella was first published in February 2008; the fifth edition appeared in May the same year. José [Augusto Neves] Cardoso Pires worked in various jobs until he turned to journalism in 1949. His fiction was subjected to censorship and controversy under the Salazar regime. The author's novel Alexandra Alpha (1987; 5th ed., 1998), was awarded the Prémio Especial by the Associação dos Críticos do Brasil. Balada da Praia dos Cães was awarded the Grande Prémio de Romance e Novela by the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores. He has worked as executive director of a TVI news program.

First published 1990. The author, born in 1949, has published at least three novels, one story, and eleven volumes of poetry, in addition to six volumes of plays. In 1998 he was awarded the Grande Prémio APE de Teatro for the play O terceiro andar. He won the Prémio Eixo Atlântico de Textos Dramaticos in 2000 for his play Seis mulhers sob escuta.

This is the author's first novel. It is said to be an "expedição paleontológica, que tenta descobrir a origem do homem" and "uma reflexão profunda sobre a essência do ser humano e uma proposta filosófica envolvendo o futuro da Humanidade." Moreover, full of imaginary conversations, it is called a "fantasioso romance e uma bela e emocionante história de amor. "Born in Lisbon in 1957, Rosa studied at the Liceu Camões, where he was a student of Vergílio Ferreira, and claims to be a disciple of that author. Later he received a degree in social anthropology from the Catholic University of Leuven, and studied at the graduate level at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

First published 1995; this is the author's first (and only?) novel. He has published works of reportage, a book of poems, and another of short stories. According to a statement by the publisher on the back cover, "Com este romance o fim do Império em Moçambique deixa definitivamente de ser uma nuvem distante e baça". Saavedra, after a brief beginning in journalism, had been called up to fight in the colonial wars in Moçambique, and later settled in Lourenço Marques as a secondary school teacher. After the rebellion of 7 September 1974 he took refuge in South Africa, and worked for radio Suázi and R.S.A., as well as directing a weekly review. He returned to Portugal in 1987, and began work for the Diário de notícias, editing the section on the economy, and working as director-adjunto of Notícias magazine.

Historical novel based on the famous 1514 mission sent by D. Manuel I of Portugal to Pope Leo X. Six ships laden with treasure from Africa and India embarked from Lisbon. One of the highlights was the speech of obedience delivered before the Pope by the fidalgo D. Diogo Pacheco. A subplot is the love affair of D. Diogo with the beautiful Jewess Raquel Aboab. The author was born in the hamlet of Santo António d'Alva in 1946. According to the publisher's blurb for his first novel, he studied at Coimbra, and the war in Guiné. A journalist who worked sixteen years for Expresso, he was editor of that weekly newspaper. He has produced two documentaries on the colonial wars, and has worked for O diário, Diário de Lisboa, and Grande reportagem. His first novel, As lágrimas de Aquiles (2001), was based on personal experiences of almost two years of combat in Guiné; after 25 years the protagonist of the novel returns to discover, in short "não há ponto de regresso nem reencontro com o amor perdido." The author's second novel, Rosa brava (2005; 8 editions, with more than 30,000 copies said to have been sold), based on the life of Leonor Teles, "an emancipated woman" who lived in a medieval court of "luxury and seduction".

The author has a doctorate in the psychology of education, and has published in her academic specialty both in Portugal and abroad. This historical novella set in the sixteenth century appears to be her first work of fiction.

The author was born in Paris, 1972. His book of poems Nuvens & labirintos (Gótica, 2001), was awarded the Prémio Literário Cidade de Almada, 2001. He received an undergraduate degree in Biology from the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, but began working as a journalist while still at the university, spending 14 years, beginning in 1993, at the Diário de notícias. At the time this volume appeared he was literary critic and editor of the book review section of Expresso, as well as a regular contributor to the review Ler.
