Alves Reis, who
at the height of his career was the owner of automobile
dealerships, mining companies, and banks, was a forger of
contracts and other documents. He perpetrated the most
audacious confidence scheme in Portuguese history, and
perhaps one of the boldest in all human history. Rather
than produce counterfeit bank notes, he forged the
documents purporting to authorize him to secretly arrange
on behalf of the Banco de Portugal for the printing and
delivery to him of Portuguese 500$00 notes (at the time the
highest denomination in circulation) by the same British
firm which printed the genuine notes.
