First published 1996. This novel is about Solitão Fernandes, born in Giestal dos Frades, son of poor working class folk. His godmother is a medium, in contact with his dead grandmother, who sends messages full of immorality and without shame. With such guidance, Solitão Fernandes achieves worldly success. Then something unforeseen occurs. The author has published fourteen novels and novellas, two volumes of short fiction, as well as literature for children. His work has been translated into Spanish, Italian, German, and Bulgarian.

The author's first book, originally published in 1984. In the year 147 B.C. several thousand Lusitanian warriors are surrounded by the troops of the Roman praetor Caius Vetilius. The Lusitanians elect a supreme commander, named Viriato, who manages to hold off the Romans for seven years, until he is assassinated. The novel displays Viriato's military, political and diplomatic genius, as well as evoking a lost world, eventually smothered by the more powerful Romans, but which left some deep marks in Spain and Portugal.

A poet, writer of fiction and journalist, he was born in São Gotardo, Minas Gerais, 1951. He has published more than a dozen volumes of poetry since 1980, One of them, Diário do mudo, was awarded the Prémio Nacional de Litertura Cidade de Belo Horizonte, 1983.

The present novella is his first "romance".

The author of this novel about the sexual and political revolutions of the late 1960s and early 1970s was born in Nevogilde, Porto, 1948. In 1987 he published a volume of essays, Ao encontro do Halley. His first work of fiction, Spora, was published in 1993; it was a finalist in the competition for the Grande Prémio do Romance e Novella of the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores; another work of fiction, O cavaleiro azul, appeared in 2001, to favorable criticism, while a novella, Pessoas, animais e outros que tais, narrações do Dr. Domingos Pintado, was published in 2006 in the present collection.

Novel by a native of Porto who has written on problems facing women for O comércio do Porto. In 2001 the author published A Rua do Paraíso: recordações de um lugar portuense (1935-1950). Ana Augusta (2005), which published earlier in the same collection, appears to be her first published work of fiction in book form.

Latest work of fiction, set in the Alentejo, by an author whose work has enjoyed both commercial and critical success. O livro grande de Tebas, Navio e Mariana (1982) won the Prémio Cidade de Lisboa. A paixão do Conde de Fróis (1986; 3rd ed. 1993) was awarded the Prémio Dom Dinis. Quatrocentos mil sestércios (1991) won the Grande Prémio APE for short stories in 1992; Se perguntarem por mim, não estou, seguido de Haja harmonia (1999) received the same award for theater. Um deus passeando pela brisa da tarde (1994), an historical novel set in the ancient world, interweaving passages from Virgil, the Satyricon, and the Bible with the narrative, was awarded the Grande Prémio do Romance, 1995, by the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores. In 1996 it received the Prémio Fernando Namora, the Prémio de Romance e Novela APE/IPLB, and the Prémio Literário Giuseppe Acerbi. The seven editions printed over six years consisted of a total of 18,000 copies—few Portuguese novels have printings of more than 2–3,000 copies, and most stay in–print for years without subsequent editions. Also awarded the Pegasus Prize, the book has been translated into English by Gregory Rebassa. Fantasia para dois coronéis e uma piscina (2003) won the Prémio PEN Clube Português for fiction and the Grande Prémio de Literatura itf/dst. The present novella had an initial printing of 15,000 copies.

The present novel is about Delfina, "uma negra daquelas que os brancos gostam". She seeks a white man in order to "eliminar a sua raça para ganhar a liberdade". She encounters the fundamental contradictions of her goals. Born in Manjacaze, Moçambique in 1955, the author has published various short stories in newspapers and reviews. Her first "novel" [i.e. novella?], Balada de amor ao vento (Lisbon: Caminho, 2003; 3rd Caminho ed., 2007), which originally appeared in 1990 [Maputo?], is said to be the first "romance" by a Moçambican woman. Her novel Ventos do apocalipse was self-published in Maputo in 1995, then published by Caminho, 1999 (2nd Caminho ed., 2006). Another novel, Niketche: uma história de poligamia (2002; 4th ed., 2008), according to the publisher's "belt" had 5,000 copies printed of its second edition, dated the same year as the first, which was said to have been printed in an edition of 3,000. Books by Paulina Chiziane have been translated and published in Germany, Spain, the United States, France and Italy.

Born Porto, 1955, the author has acquired Mozambique nationality. Historian on the faculty of the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Maputo, he has dedicated himself to the investigation of the colonial and subsequent civil wars in Moçambique. He has published various academic texts in Mozambique, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Spain and Canada. This novella describing a trip from South Africa to Inhambane is at least his eighth volume of fiction.

Born in Beira, Mozambique, in 1955, Mia Couto was editor of the review Tempo and of the newspaper Noticias de Maputo. His first novel, Terra somnambula, appeared in 1991; a second, Estórias abensonhadas, followed in 1994 (5th ed., 2000). A Varanda do Frangipani (1996, 5th ed., 2000), has achieved both critical and commercial success. He has published several collections of short stories, at least one of which—Vozes anoitecidas—was translated into English and published by Heinemann; his books have been translated as well into Spanish, French, Italian, German, Swedish, Norwegian, and Dutch. He has also published a book of poetry. The Prémio Vergílio Ferreira was awarded to Mia Couto in 1999 for his work as a whole.

This novella is set in Angola and is about the murder of a Portuguese man. The author, an Angolan national, was Presidente do Conselho de Administração do Instituto de Crédito de Angola, Director de Contabilidade e das Operações Internacionais do Banco Nacional de Angola, Governador do Banco Nacional de Angola, and a member of the government of the República Popular de Angola. He published two previous literary works in Angola, in 2003 and 2006.

The author is a native of Lisbon, born in 1948. This is a fictionalized account of his experiences in Moçambique between 1971 and 1974.

Novella about domestic relationships. The author (b. Oliveira de Azeméis, 1939), former deputy in the National Legislature (1976–1983), worked as architect of the Gabinete de Urbanização da Câmara Municipal do Porto (1967–1976), and subsequently in other positions dealing with urban planning and renewal. His novella about a war declared by the municipal authorities against pigeons, from the pigeons' point of view, A revolta das pombas, appeared in 2001. A ruína (crónica romanceada), was published by Caixotim in 2004. In his brief novel A barqueira (2005), action shifts from conservative nineteenth-century Minho to present day New York, Lisbon, Porto and Furnas, in the Açores.

The author, a surgeon specializing in sports medicine, was born in Lisbon, 1941. He has written about one hundred of scientific papers, two of which were awarded prizes. He also has poems published in newspapers and reviews, while his non-fiction book, Paparratos: novas crónicas da Guiné was published by Prefácio in 2004. The present volume appears to contain memoirs in the form of a novel about experiences in Guiné pre-1974.

The author, a physician, was born in 1937. He exercised his profession on the battlefield in Guiné-Bissau during the colonial wars; this novel / novella appears to be based on those experiences. While he has written for medical reviews, this is his first literary work.

First published 1958. José-Augusto França is one of Portugal's leading art and cultural historians, as well as being an important critic, literary figure, and intellectual. His Eleonor na serra de Pascoaes was awarded the Prémio Revelação de Ensaio de 1989 by the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores—Instituto da Biblioteca Nacional e do Livro. He has written a number of volumes of poetry and criticism, and contributed to A planície e o abismo (Actas do Congresso sobre Florbela Espanca realizado na Universidade de Évora).

The author, a native of São Miguel de Lobrigos, Vila Real, was brought up in Lisbon, spent some time in secondary school in Luanda, and finished his secondary education in Lourenço Marques. An anesthesiologist, his present novella, in diary form, recounts minute by minute, hour by hour experiences in a hospital emergency room. Mesquita fought in the colonial wars in Moçambique from 1968 to 1972. His novel Sombras africanas (2006), appears to be based on those experiences. He has also published a work of non-fiction on the same subject, Inferno verde (2005).

First published 1988. These are fictionalized memoirs, in which names have been changed, while the accounts are supposed to be based on fact. The subtitle, which appears on the front cover, but not on the title page, is as mossas da prostituição, corrupção e desespero.

He was born in Lisbon in 1932, has lived in France, Brazil, and England, and now for many years in Barcelona, having traveled in the former Soviet Union and other countries. At one time he worked as a journalist for the BBC in London, and has practiced the same profession in Barcelona. He has translated works into Portuguese, Spanish, and Catalan. The author was born in Almada, 1932. Lawyer, teacher, judge in the Tribunal do Trabalho, and the Supremo Tribunal Administrativo, as well as the Tribunal Superior de Justiça de Macau, he was vice-presidant of the Associação para o Progresso do Direito and president of the Associação Sindical dos Juízes Portugueses. In his youth he dabbled in poetry, then between 1979 and 1994 he published several volumes of non-fiction about law, politics, democracy, etc. This novella is his first work of fiction.

This "romance" set in the post independence period in Angola was first published in Brazil in 1995. It begins with a quote from the Brazilian classic A retirada da laguna, by Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay (Visconde de Taunay). The author has written a new preface for the present edition. A young Brazilian diplomat who had been present in Luanda in 1975 when independence had been achieved, returns seventeen years later at the moment when UNITA troops were encountered for the first time within the confines of the capital. The author has written three books of poems, Poetica do novo bardo (1972), Meu canto aberto (1993), and Rosas da infância (2005), as well as, including the present work, four "romances", the other three of which are O menino e o deserto (1982), A opressiva inconstância da felicidade (1985), and A invasão da Amazónia (2007). In 2005 he was awarded the Medalha João Ribeiro by the Academia Brasileira de Letras.

The author won the Prémio Portugal Telecom de Literatura, 2007 which, according to the publisher's "belt" is "o maior prémio literário em língua portuguesa do Brasil." Born in 1970, the author published his first work, Livro da dança, in 2001. His novel Jerusalem (Círculo de Leitores, 2004; Caminho, 2005) was awarded the Prémio Ler by the Millenium B.C.P. and the Prémio José Saramago for 2005. His Senhor Valéry (2002) was awarded the Prémio Branquinho da Fonseca by the weekly newspaper Expresso and the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Investigações, Novalis, poesia (2002) was awarded the Prémio Revelação de Poesia APE / IPLG, 1999. A volume of poems, O homem ou é tonto ou é mulher (2002), was adapted for the stage at the Teatro Aberto during the "encontro do Novíssimo Teatro de Expressão Portuguesa e Alemã" by the Artistas Unidos n’ A Capital. His poetry has appeared in anthologies in Portugal, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as in English and American reviews, while his prose has been translated into Italian, Hungarian, Spanish and French. He has also been published in Brazil.
