without shame. With such guidance, Solitão Fernandes
achieves worldly success. Then something unforeseen occurs.
The author has published fourteen novels and novellas, two
volumes of short fiction, as well as literature for
children. His work has been translated into Spanish,
Italian, German, and Bulgarian.

B.C. several thousand Lusitanian warriors are surrounded by
the troops of the Roman praetor Caius Vetilius. The
Lusitanians elect a supreme commander, named Viriato, who
manages to hold off the Romans for seven years, until he is
assassinated. The novel displays Viriato's military,
political and diplomatic genius, as well as evoking a lost
world, eventually smothered by the more powerful Romans,
but which left some deep marks in Spain and Portugal.

in 2006 in the present collection.

Prémio Cidade de Lisboa. A paixão do
Conde de Fróis (1986; 3rd ed.
1993) was awarded the Prémio Dom Dinis. Quatrocentos
mil sestércios (1991) won the
Grande Prémio APE for short stories in 1992;
Se
perguntarem por mim, não estou, seguido de Haja
harmonia (1999) received
the same award for theater. Um deus
passeando pela brisa da tarde (1994), an
historical novel set in the ancient world, interweaving
passages from Virgil, the Satyricon,
and the Bible
with the
narrative, was awarded the Grande Prémio do Romance, 1995,
by the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores. In 1996 it
received the Prémio Fernando Namora, the Prémio de Romance
e Novela APE/IPLB, and the Prémio Literário Giuseppe
Acerbi. The seven editions printed over six years consisted
of a total of 18,000 copies—few Portuguese novels have
printings of more than 2–3,000 copies, and most stay
in–print for years without subsequent editions. Also
awarded the Pegasus Prize, the book has been translated
into English by Gregory Rebassa. Fantasia
para dois coronéis e uma piscina (2003) won the
Prémio PEN Clube Português for fiction and the Grande
Prémio de Literatura itf/dst. The present novella had an
initial printing of 15,000 copies.

The present
novel is about Delfina, "uma negra daquelas que os brancos
gostam". She seeks a white man in order to "eliminar a sua
raça para ganhar a liberdade". She encounters the
fundamental contradictions of her goals. Born in Manjacaze,
Moçambique in 1955, the author has published various short
stories in newspapers and reviews. Her first "novel" [i.e.
novella?], Balada de
amor ao vento (Lisbon:
Caminho, 2003; 3rd Caminho ed., 2007), which originally
appeared in 1990 [Maputo?], is said to be the first
"romance" by a Moçambican woman. Her novel
Ventos do
apocalipse was
self-published in Maputo in 1995, then published by
Caminho, 1999 (2nd Caminho ed., 2006). Another
novel, Niketche:
uma história de poligamia (2002; 4th ed.,
2008), according to the publisher's "belt" had 5,000 copies
printed of its second edition, dated the same year as the
first, which was said to have been printed in an edition of
3,000. Books by Paulina Chiziane have been translated and
published in Germany, Spain, the United States, France and
Italy.

1955, the author has acquired Mozambique nationality.
Historian on the faculty of the Universidade Eduardo
Mondlane, Maputo, he has dedicated himself to the
investigation of the colonial and subsequent civil wars in
Moçambique. He has published various academic texts in
Mozambique, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Spain and Canada.
This novella describing a trip from South Africa to
Inhambane is at least his eighth volume of fiction.

Mozambique, in 1955, Mia Couto was editor of the
review Tempo

Maputo. His first
novel, Terra
somnambula, appeared in

abensonhadas, followed in
1994 (5th ed., 2000). A Varanda
do Frangipani (1996, 5th ed.,
2000), has achieved both critical and commercial success.
He has published several collections of short stories, at
least one of which—Vozes
anoitecidas—was translated
into English and published by Heinemann; his books have
been translated as well into Spanish, French, Italian,
German, Swedish, Norwegian, and Dutch. He has also
published a book of poetry. The Prémio Vergílio Ferreira
was awarded to Mia Couto in 1999 for his work as a whole.

hospital emergency room. Mesquita fought in the colonial
wars in Moçambique from 1968 to 1972. His novel
Sombras
africanas (2006), appears
to be based on those experiences. He has also published a
work of non-fiction on the same subject,
Inferno verde (2005).

journalist for the BBC in London, and has practiced the
same profession in Barcelona. He has translated works into

born in Almada, 1932. Lawyer, teacher, judge in the
Tribunal do Trabalho, and the Supremo Tribunal
Administrativo, as well as the Tribunal Superior de Justiça
de Macau, he was vice-presidant of the Associação para o
Progresso do Direito and president of the Associação
Sindical dos Juízes Portugueses. In his youth he dabbled in
poetry, then between 1979 and 1994 he published several
volumes of non-fiction about law, politics, democracy, etc.
This novella is his first work of fiction.

set in the post independence period in Angola was first
published in Brazil in 1995. It begins with a quote from
the Brazilian classic A retirada
da laguna, by Alfredo
d'Escragnolle Taunay (Visconde de Taunay). The author has
written a new preface for the present edition. A young
Brazilian diplomat who had been present in Luanda in 1975
when independence had been achieved, returns seventeen
years later at the moment when UNITA troops were
encountered for the first time within the confines of the
capital. The author has written three books of
poems, Poetica do
novo bardo (1972),
Meu canto
aberto (1993),
and Rosas da
infância (2005), as well
as, including the present work, four "romances", the other
three of which are O menino e
o deserto (1982),
A opressiva
inconstância da felicidade (1985),

he was awarded the Medalha João Ribeiro by the Academia
Brasileira de Letras.

awarded the Prémio Revelação de Poesia APE / IPLG, 1999. A
volume of poems, O homem ou
é tonto ou é mulher (2002), was
adapted for the stage at the Teatro Aberto during the
"encontro do Novíssimo Teatro de Expressão Portuguesa e
Alemã" by the Artistas Unidos n’ A Capital. His poetry has
appeared in anthologies in Portugal, the Netherlands, and
Belgium, as well as in English and American reviews, while
his prose has been translated into Italian, Hungarian,
Spanish and French. He has also been published in Brazil.
