Huge, important study. The following summary appears on the back covers (apparently written by the author):
"The objective of this two-volume study is itself twofold: on the one hand, to clarify through documentary evidence (especially in vol. 1) facts and areas of the life and professional activity of the great seventeenth-century Portuguese poet and novelist Francisco Rodrigues Lobo that are badly known or even unknown (for example, his crypto-Judaism, the denunciations to the Ecclesiastical Tribunal and the 'Mesa' of the Inquisition, his interest in the Zohar); on the other hand, to investigate and establish, on the basis of the knowledge of these documentary means, and through interaction with minute semi-rhetorical textual analyses (especially in vol. 2), how much the personal socio-economic situation of Rodrigues Lobo, 'courtier' and 'New Christian', living his whole professional life in the urban-rural town of Leiria – dominated by the House of Vila Real and watched over by the Inquisition – conditioned the structuring of his incredible literary discourse with subtlety and acuteness. An attempt is made to demonstrate how the rhetorical strategy of ambiguous dissimulatio, chosen by Lobo at both macro- and microstructural levels, provoked in his discourse from the 'Romances' of 1596 up to the posthumous 'jornada'; a diegetic dislocation of a kind that (freeing him of extra-textual risks, especially judicial, and not just inquisitorial) nevertheless permitted the edification and enunciation of a phantasmal-autobiographical pact capable of being read in terms of extra-textual referentiality and fictional-historical mimesis.
The circumstances of his complex and stubborn relationship with the aristocratic and bookish patron of the House of Vila Real, Dona Juliana de Lara, with all its consequences, as well as the shadow cast by the Tribunal of the Inquisition, increasingly active in relation to the New-Christian community of Leiria, appear to have provoked Lobo's linguistic imagination. Aided by a very solid rhetorical knowledge, a good judicial training at university, and following a novelistic model that was already well tried, he platted out, at macro- and microstrucural levels, enunciations of diegetic renewal and purified linguistic acutezza so efficient and so inventive that they make of him the 'miglior fabbro' of the Portuguese language in the first half of the seventeenth century, this is, at a time when Padre António Vieira and D. Francisco Manuel de Mello had not yet been born, and, later on, when the were just children of no more than ten years of age.
The documentary evidence of history and the semiotic-linguistic evidence of rhetoric have both been used here as tools of investigation. The profuse documentary evidence, in both printed and manuscript form (most of it previously unpublished), systematically researched in archives and libraries, national and foreign, and consisting of processes of the Inquisition, books of the 'Promotor', inquisitorial and other correspondence, books of denunciations, parish registers, notary public books, Chanceries, political codices, poetic miscellanies, etc., interacting with the numerous and minute semio-rhetorical textual analyses, leads to the proposed conclusions of a persuasive solidity that has the force as much of fact as of reason."
