Two related
two-act plays of historical fiction whose theme is the
change in Portugal, from being a progressive country to
becoming a "sinister corner of Europe" during the course of
the years 1540-1546. The first is set in Lisbon and
Antwerp, 1540-1541; the second is set in Antwerp,
1543-1546. The author's preface, dated 2003, appears to
indicate that Os
deserdados da pátria, written in
1982 and 1988, may have been published previously, but
frankly, he does not make this clear, at least to this
reader. In any event, the present volume, according to the
author, contains the definitive texts. Norberto Ávila has
published 26 volumes of plays, a novel, and a volume of
poetry.

Play, with
Camilo Castelo Branco as the leading character. According
to the preface, the play has three themes:

felicidade?, "que varre a
vida sentimental do escritor"; and Noites de
insónia, "um olhar
sobre a escrita e a pulsão suicida de Camilo".
