The author is
one of the foremost authorities on the history of early
printing in Portugal. Of his Origens da
imprensa em Portugal (Portuguese
edition 1981, French edition 1983), F.J. Norton wrote,
"Splendid book . . . I have been greatly impressed by the
completeness of its information and by its concision of
expression, excluding all useless speculation." Two more
volumes were projected: vol. II to cover 1536-1768, vol.
III, 1768 to the present. They have yet to appear.
