essays; pp. 379-488). While much of the various texts deal
with Lisbon and the plans for rebuilding, there are essays
on the impact in Spain, Galicia, the Algarve, Edinburgh,
and Rio de Janeiro. There are essays by Araújo, Cardoso,
Monteiro, the two additional editors not named above, José
Vicente Serrão and Walter Rossa, among others.

These most
interesting volumes include an interview of Artur Teodoro
de Matos by Ana Isabel Buescu and Jorge Flores (pp.
xxi-xxx), a bibliography of the honoree (pp. [xxxi-xlii]),
and 54 essays (1 in French, 2 in English, the rest in
Portuguese). The first section, titled "História geral"
contains 19 essays, with subjects ranging from ancient
Egypt and Babilónia, Iria Gonçalves on medieval Beira,
Maria José Palla on the Auto dos
físicos of Gil Vicente,
Ana Isabel Buescu on Charles V and Portugal, António dos
Santos Pereira on Camões and Portuguese national identity
in the sixteenth century, João Pedro Marques on Sá de
Bandeira and white slavery, to José Alberto Rodrigues da
Silva Tavim on Jewish identity in twentieth-century Brazil.
The rest of the essays deal with the history of Portuguese
expansion. There are 5 on the general history of the
empire, including an essay on the utopia of the
Quinto
Imperio in sermons of
the Restauração by João Francisco Marques, and Alfredo
Pinheiro Marques on the cartography of the New World in the
second quarter of the sixteenth century. A section of the
Atlantic Islands, with 13 essays, includes João Paulo

sixteenth century, Carlos Almeida on the Jesuits and Creole
society in Cabo Verde in the first half of the seventeenth

São Tomé, 1520-1550. This is followed by a section on the
Orient, with 12 essays, including Geneviève Bouchon on the
first soundings of China in Portuguese Asia, 1500-1525,
Eugénia Rodrigues on the Misericórdias of Moçambique and
local administration, ca. 1606-1763, Fátima da Silva
Gracias on some aspects of social cultural life in Goa,
1788-1961, Manuel Lobato on the implimentation of the
Iberian Union in Asia and the account of the voyage of
Francisco de Dueñas from Manila to Maluco in 1582, Roderich
Ptak on Birds of Paradise in Macau, Luís Filipe Barreto
with rather meaty reflections on the History of the Far
East, and Horácio Peixoto de Araújo on António de Gouvea,
chronicler of the China Mission. Finally, there is a
section on Brazil and Africa with 5 essays, including Maria
Beatriz Nizza da Silva onculture in Rio de Janeiro during
the period of the Portuguese court, 1808-1822, Ângela
Domingues on the scientific press and the image of colonial
Brazil, Marília dos Santos Lopes on how the savages became
more savage in the eyes of modern Europe toward Africa,

published in 2000 as part of O mito de
Portugal: a primeira história de Portugal e a sua função
política. However, the
chronological tables (pp. 21-44) and analytical index (pp.
203-34) are original to the present edition, while the
introduction appears in a somewhat different form, and the
bibliography is more compact.
