First published in Coimbra in 16 volumes from 1942 to 1993; several of these volumes had at least a second edition; the work was published in a two volume edition by Dom Quixote in 1999. None of these editions were illustrated. The text of the present edition consists of extracts pertaining to Torga's beloved native Trás-os-Montes, accompanied by superb photographs by Paulo Magalhães.
