Two volumes, with 40 plates, were published by the Imprensa Nacional in 1903 and 1907. They were reprinted in 1983. An additional 53 plates were discovered at that time in the offices of the Imprensa Nacional—these were issued as a supplement in 1985; all were published together in a single volume by the Imprensa Nacional in 1998. The editor of the present volume has designated the volumes published together by the Imprensa Nacional in 1998 as "Volume I".
In 2001, additional watercolors were discovered in the archives of the Aquário Vasco da Gama. In 2003 the Marinha Portuguesa, Aquario Vasco da Gama, and Lusitania, Companhia de Seguros, published 110 full page color ornithological illustrations in a similar format to the present work, with scientific obserrvations and commentaries written by D. Carlos to support the illustrations. That volume has been designated by the present editior as "Volume II".
