There is a poem at the beginning, "Pátria", although most of the book is prose regarding Torga's personal feelings about Portugal.  It often reads like a travel guide. For instance "O Porto" begins: "Eu gosto do Porto. Não do Porto erudito do Sampaio Bruno ou do burguês e literário do Ramalho." "O Ribatejo" begins: "O Ribatejo deve ser visto das Portas do Sol de Santarém, num dia de cheia, ou das bancadas duma praça de toiros, numa tarde de verão." Throughout he quotes familiar refrains, as well as Augusto Gil, Gil Vicente, and others. The prose often feels like poetry, with an autobiographical and "mythological" touch.

Contains essays on John Lennon (2), Jim Morrison, Roger Waters (2), Roy Orbison, Brian Wilson, Janis Joplin, Elton John, and a wide variety of other subjects. The author, a psychiatrist born in Porto in 1949, has published fiction, essays, scientific and popular scientific studies: O sexo dos anjos, O fio invisível, Muros, Conversas no papel, Estilhaços, O tempo dos espelhos, and Estes difíceis amores.
