Texts by Duarte, illustrations by Henriques. Rita Taborda Duarte was born in Lisbon, 1973. A professor at the Universidade da Beira Interior at the time these works appeared, she has published various books of poetry. She has also written two previous books for children, both illustrated by Henriques. A verdadeira história da Alice was awarded the Prémio Branquinho da Fonseca Expresso / Gulbenkian for 2003. Luís Henriques, also born in Lisbon in 1973, has illustrated children’s books by Duarte and by João Pedro Mésseder. He has also illustrated comic books.

José Jorge Letria’s A dúvida melódica was awarded the Prémio de Poesia Cidade da Amadora, 1993. Born in Cascais in 1951, he has published at least 33 volumes of poetry, a number of which have also been awarded literary prizes, including the Prémio Eça de Queiroz–Município de Lisboa (twice), the Prémio Gulbenkian, and others. See Machado, Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, p. 266. His historical novella, Morro bem, salvem a pátria (2005), was set around the assassination of Sidónio Pais at the Rossio Station in Lisbon, December 1918. From January 1994 until January 2002 Letria was Vereador da Cultura for the Câmara Municipal de Cascais.

The author, born Porto, 1957, has published at least eight volumes of verse (three for children). His book of poems, Fissura (2000), was awarded the Prémio Literário Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho for 1999 by the Câmara Municipal de Loures.

The author has had several best-selling books among at least five novels, and three collections of essays. Her collection of short and shorter romantic pieces, Vou contar-te um segredo (2006), was published in an initial edition of 25,000 copies. She has also written two plays and two screenplays. Her work has been published in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Lithuania and Brazil.

Originally published in 1968, with illustrations by Leonor Praça. Alves Redol (1911-1969) was the first neo-realist novelist to achieve wide recognition in Portugal.
