author of these travel essays, poet and writer of fiction,
was born in Angola in 1941, and contributed toward the
“modernidade” of Angolan poetry at the beginning of the
1970s. He received the Prémio National de Literatura de
Angola in 1989. An anthropologist with a Ph.D. from the
École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, he was
“Professor titular” at the Universidade de Luanda at the
time this book appeared; previously he was visiting
professor at the universities of São Paulo and Coimbra.
With at least three volumes of poetry and three of fiction
to his credit, he has also published two other important
works of non-fiction: Ana a
Manda (1989),
and Vou lá
visitar pastores: exploração epistolar de um percurso
angolano em território Kuvale (1999).

The aim of this
collection is to reproduce in facsimile the original
editions of all the works of the Portuguese humanist Damião
de Góis, accompanied by a critical transcription in the
original Latin, as well as a Portuguese translation. The
editor provides an introduction as well as annotations.
Damião de Góes (1502-1574), an important figure in the
Portuguese humanist movement, was raised at the court of
King Manuel. He served as secretary to the Portuguese
Factory at Antwerp, and during many years of European
travel became acquainted with Luther, Melanchthon, Erasmus,
Cornelius Grapheus, Johann Jakob Fugger and Dürer. After
his return to Portugal he was named Keeper of Archives and
Royal Chronicler. In 1571 the Inquisition arrested him, and
a year later pronounced him a Lutheran heretic: he was
excommunicated, sentenced to life imprisonment, and his
property confiscated. His final two years were spent in
prison and at the Monastery of Batalha. Góis’s best-known
work is the Cronica do Felicissimo Rey Dom Emanuel, Lisbon,
1566-67, “the work of a scholar who likes to describe
directly, from his own experience” (Bell,
Portuguese
Literature p. 214).
