Volume I of a

the work and the establishment of the inventory is that of
the editors. José Mattoso, Paulo Pereira and Teresa Belo
are “consultores científicos”. Chapter introductions are
being written by Álvaro Duarte de Almeida and Paulo
Pereira. A large team is working on descriptions of
individual units of patrimony as well as documentary
research, and a significant number of entries are signed
with the initials of the contributors, such as Paulo
Pereira (PP), Ferrnando Mota de Matos (FMM), Ana Cláudia
Vicente (AV), etc. Cartographical support in digital form
is being provided by the Instituto Geográfico do Exército.
The work is being produced in collaboration with the
Ministério da Cultura and the Instituto Português do
Património Arquitectónico. We are accepting standing
orders.

2005. This second edition constains a new preface by Pedro
Gomes Barbosa, as well as a brief introduction by the
author, also new. The gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira,
in the Serra da Sintra, belong to a class which includes
the Villa d’Este, Boboli, Bomarzo and Torrigiani, in Italy,
Varsailles and the Désert de Tetz, in France, Stowe and
Stourhead, in England, and Hortus Palatinus and the Parque
Worlitz, in Germany. It was constructed during the final
decade of the nineteenth century and the first decade of
the twentieth with funds from the great fortune of António
Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), with help from the
Italian architect Luigi Manini, set designer at the Teatro
São Carlos and architectect of the Palace Hotel at Buçaco.
