illiterate, he led a colorful life, as a shepherd,
stonecutter's assistant, and guard for the Policia de
Segurança Pública (a post for which his temperament was
grossly unsuited). As an itinerant lottery ticket seller,
he traveled to various regional fairs. He came to the
attention of teacher at the Liceu de Faro, Joaquim
Magalhães, who began to collect his work, and promoted its
printing. This posthumous anthology first appeared in
1969.

Armando Silva Carvalho, author of fiction and poetry, born
near Obidos, 1938, has been awarded several literary
prizes. He worked as a lawyer for a brief time, then opted
for journalism. His work has been translated into Spanish,
Italian, French, English, German, Dutch, Swedish, Russian,
and Latvian. He has translated into Portuguese, among
others, Stéphane Mallarmé, Marguerite Duras, Samuel
Beckett, Aimé Césaire, and Andrei Voznessenski. See

Gastão
[Santana Franco da] Cruz, a co-founder (with Carlos
Fernando) and director of the Grupo Teatro Hoje,
established in 1975 and since 1977 located at the Teatro da
Graça, was theater critic for the review
Vida mundial in 1975 and for
the weekly O
Jornal in 1977. In
1961 he participated in the publication of
Poesia
61. From 1966-67
he was poetry critic for the literary supplement to
Diário de
Lisboa; from 1969-70
he critiqued poetry for the review Seara
Nova; in 1972 he
did the same for Crítica.
He has published in excess of 20 volumes of poetry. From
1980 to 1986 he served as Reader of Portuguese at King's
College, University of London. Born in Faro in 1941, Cruz
has translated Shakespeare, Strindberg, and Cocteau into

de Freitas, born 1972, is a published literary critic and
art historian. He has published a brief essay about the
poetry of Al Berto, A noite dos
espelhos (1999),
Uma espécie
de crime: apresentação do rosto de Herberto
Helder (2001), as well
as at least fourteen volumes of his own poetry. He edited
at least one anthology of poems by other contemporary
authors. According to a friend whose opinion we respect,
Manuel de Freitas is the best twenty-first-century
Portuguese poet!

Originally
published by Hiena Editora in 1991, this book also appeared
in second and third editions, published by Edições Asa, in
1996 and 1997. The present edition is said to follow the
first, incorporating manuscript corrections left in the
possession of the author's family. Pacheco was born in
Coimbra in 1937, and died in Lisbon in 1995. He published
his first volume of poetry, Cuidar dos
vivos, in 1963; in
1991 a collected volume of poetry appeared, complete as of
that date. Trabalhos e
paixões de Benito Prada (1993; 5th ed.,
1996), a novel set in Coimbra in 1949, when General Franco
was to receive an honorary degree, in which Benito Prado,
the protagonist, is a Gallego from Casdemundo, was the
author's first and only only full length work of fiction.
His only other published work of fiction was a
novella, Walt
(1978).

Miguel Júdice which appeared in the 1993 edition. The 1993
edition, in similar format, contained only 302 pp. See

According
to Alberto de Lacerda, in his preface to Amorim de
Sousa's Ultramarino
(1997), Luís
Amorim de Sousa, a native of Angola, is one of the best
living Portuguese-language poets. Also an author of
fiction, he lived in Lisbon, Maputo, and London, where he
worked for the BBC. From 1976 to 1995 he worked as the
press officer at the Portuguese embassy in Washington,
transferring then to Brasilia.

Ana
Paula Tavares, a native of Huíla, Angola (b. 1952), has
published several volumes of poetry, including
Dizes-me
coisas amargas como os frutos (2001), which
was awarded the Prémio Mário António de Poesia for 2004 by
the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. She has also published a
novella written jointly with Jorge Marmelo, while her
poetry and prose are represented in a number of anthologies
published in Portugal, Brazil, France, Germany, and
Spain.
