Volume
I consists of a facsimile reprint of the Lyon, 1605
edition, in Latin. Volume II contains a preface,
translation of the text into Portuguese, and notes by J.
Mendes de Castro, as well as an introduction and
translation of the prologue by Raúl M. Rosado Fernandes.
Father Luís da Cruz was an important humanist, poet, and
most famous as a pulpit orator. Well grounded in Greek and
Latin, he taught rhetoric and Holy Scripture. The present
work contains four tragedies, one of which, "Seducias", was
staged at Coimbra in 1570 when the king D. Sebastião
visited the university. "A representação desta tragédia deu
soberano".Grande
