A massive and important history and description of Vila Viçosa, original solar of the Brangança dynasty and a residence of the kings of Portugal and House of Bragança after 1640. The Memórias consists of a transcription of Espanca's massive manuscript, compiled between 1862 and 1886 and now in the Biblioteca da Câmara Municipal de Vila Viçosa, which had previously remained unpublished, save for a small portion published as Compendio de noticias de Villa Viçosa (Redondo, 1892) in an edition of only 200 copies. Vols. 1-7 contain a narrative of the history and antiquities of Vila Viçosa from ancient times to 1640, with many reproductions of Latin inscriptions and quotations from documents in the municipal archives. Vols. 8-21 consist of an annual chronology of the town's history from 1640 to 1886. Vols. 22-25 include notes on topography as well as histories and descriptions of convents, orders, colleges, churches, chapels, and other religious establishments. Vol. 26 describes sacred and secular festivals; vol. 27 provides histories and descriptions of notable buildings and monuments; while education, agriculture, commerce and industry are discussed in vol. 28. Vols. 29-35 contains short biographies of approximately 1,800 notable historical figures who were born or lived in Vila Viçosa. Vol. 36 is a full topographical index to the previous 35 vols. Espanca (1839-1896), a native of Vila Viçosa, was a noted antiquary, composer of musical works and served for many years as Prior of S. Bartolomeu de Vila Viçosa.

Impressive production, based on a manuscript in the Biblioteca Nacional, Lisbon by António de Saldanha de Albuquerque, son of the Governor of Tangiers, who was a captive 14 years in Morroco, albeit under rather luxurious conditions. The editor provides an excellent critical study, introduction, and notes. A documentary appendix occupies pp. 563-642. The final 130 pp. consist of a glossary, bibliography and indices. The French translation, on facing pages, is by Léon Bourdon.

This is essentially a diary of a journey made in search of the origins of the Gothic style in architecture. The editor provides a forward (pp. 11-4), and introduction (pp. 15-91). The transcription was made by Bernardo Sá Nogueira directly from the original manuscript, previously unpublished, held by the British Library. The Portuguese translation of the text was done by Pedro Flor.
