Catalogue for an exhibition held at Badajoz in the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo, 16 March to 13 May 2001; at Lisbon in the Museu do Chiado, 24 May to 23 September 2001; and at Vila Nova de Famalicão in the Fundação Cupertino de Miranda, 27 October to 31 December 2001. Avila has written on "O surrealismo nas artes plasticas em Portugal, 1934-1952" (pp. 4-270), divided into a number of sections, including one on photography. Cuadrado's contribution, "Surrealismo, movimento surrealista e poesia surrealista em Portugal" (pp. 274-322), is also divided into several sections. It is followed by a chronology (pp. 324-349); biographies (pp. 350-377); and a bibliography (pp. 378-405). The final section contains translations into Spanish. A few of the introductory texts are in Spanish, or bilingual in both Spanish and Portuguese.

Ferreira provides an introduction, and writes about the founder and building of the museum. Fernandinho gives an overview of the museum, while Dias treats one of its major strengths, archaeology. Other major strengths of the collection of the Episcopal Palace, traditional technologies of linen and silk, and the famous embroidered bedspreads of Castelo Branco, all covered by Sónia Matos Abreu. Abreu and Celeste Ribeiro describe some of the smaller miscellaneous collections.

The inventory is divided into 18 sections, one for each district of mainland Portugal. In each district the municipalities (concelhos) are dealt with in alphabetical order. Special protection zones are indicated at the end of each section. The individual entries are organized as follows: name of building or site, brief historical/stylistic description, location, parish, grade of classification and the respective law, special protection zone (if applicable), and the respective legislation. The preface by Carlos Antero Ferreira and introduction by Alberto Flávio Lopes are repeated in French and English at the end of the final volume.
