Important new reference work. The author provides an interesting introductory essay, "Para uma história da imprensa diária portuguesa no século XX" (pp. [29]-141. The main body of the text (pp. 143-630), in two columns, lists twentieth century Portuguese newspapers in alphabetical order, giving for each its title, subtitle (if any), format, political tendencies, place of publication, time of day published, off-day (if any), administration, publisher, place or places of composition and printing, and principal contributors. There is an essay summarizing the significance of each newspaper, and finally the call numbers (if any) for the newspaper in various Portuguese libraries. The work is well indexed, and contains several tables toward the end giving such information as the numer of daily newspapers exisiting in any given year, how many new ones appeared that year, how many ceased to exist during the year; classifying daily newspapers by themes and places published.
