The author has published three previous volumes of poetry, China de jade (1997), China de seda (2001), and Terra de musgo e alegria (2005), as well as two volumes on Chinese history in collaboration with Zhang Weimin and Roderich Ptak, Sinica Lusitana I and II (Fundação Oriente, 2000-2003). Four of his translations of books from the Chinese have been published by the Instituto Cultural de Macau, one of which was awarded the Grande Prémio de Tradução, 1991, by the Pen Club Português and the Associação Portuguesa de Tradutores.

The author, born in Agueda in 1936, has a vast poetical output and has garnered a good number of prestigious literary prizes. Long-time left-wing socialist deputy to the Nacional Assembly, he was politically active against the regime prior to 1974, spending time in prison and exile. First published 2001, in a greatly abbreviated form. The "posfácio" to this anthology occupies pp. 167-75. A brief introductory essay by the editor which originally appeared in the first edition occupies pp. 7-8; an editor's preface original to the present edition follows, on pp. 9-11. The author was awarded the prestigious Prémio Camões in 1999.

This book was awarded the Prémio D. Dinis by the Fundação da Casa de Mateus, 1989, the Grande Prémio de Poesia Inasset / Inapa, 1990, and the Grande Prémio de Poesia of the Pen Club, 1990. In a note on p. 77, Luis Manuel Gaspar explains that this text has four previous independent editions, published by Texto Editora from 1989 to 2001. It was included, with minor changes by the author, in volume III of the Obra poetica of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, first published in 1991 (3rd ed., 1999). The present version respects those changes, while revising the text to conform with present orthographic orthodoxy, except where the author deliberately transgressed, such as her use of the word "dansam".

This is the third printing of a revised and expanded second edition of a book first published in Maputo, 1983, and long out-of-print. The first printing appeared in 1999. Born in Beira, Mozambique, in 1955, Mia Couto was editor of the review Tempo and of the newspaper Noticias de Maputo. His first novel, Terra somnambula, appeared in 1991 (8th ed., 2004); a second, Estórias abensonhadas, followed in 1994 (7th ed., 2003). A Varanda do Frangipani (1996, 7th ed., 2003), has achieved both critical and commercial success. He has published several collections of short stories, at least one of which - Vozes anoitecidas - was translated into English and published by Heinemann; his books have been translated as well into Spanish, French, Italian, German, Swedish, Norwegian, and Dutch. He has also published a book of poetry. The Prémio Vergílio Ferreira was awarded to Mia Couto in 1999 for his work as a whole.

The poet, author of fiction, journalist, translator and musical composer Natércia [Ribeiro de Oliveira] Freire [dos Santos] was born in Benavente, 1920. See Alvaro Manuel Machado in Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 203-4; João Bigotte Chorão in Biblos, II, 702-4; and Dicionário cronológico de autores portugueses, V, 80-1. This is the third volume in the collection "Biblioteca 'Liberta em Pedra'", the purpose of which is to publish the complete works of this author, including some texts said to be previously unpublished.

Awarded the Prémio da Crítica, 2001. Poet, playwright, critic, and author of fiction, Nuno Júdice was born in Mexilhoeira Grande, Algarve, 1949. Having received a Ph.D. in medieval literature from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 1989, he is responsible for critical editions of the Sonetos of Antero de Quental, and of the Cancioneiro of D. Dinis. His poetry has received the Prize of the Pen Clube in 1985, the Prémio D. Dinis of the Fundação Casa de Mateus in 1990, and that of the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores in 1994. His novel Por todos os séculos was awarded the Prémio Bordalo by the Casa da Imprensa. His fiction and poetry have been widely translated into Spanish, and some of his work exists as well in Italian, French, and English. The author published several books between 1978 and 1996. She collaborated in the volume Vozes e olhares do feminino (2001). She published at least three more books (at least two of which were of poetry), in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

First published by the Imprensa Nacional, 1993. The present edition contains six previously unpublished poems found among the author's papers, and a revised preface by António Cândido Franco, whose "Estudo crítico" had appeared in the previous edition. Omitted is the introductory note by José Miguel Júdice which appeared in the 1993 edition. The author has published at least nine volumes of poetry, four of fiction, and been represented in a number of anthologies. A native of Gabela, Angola (b. 1954), he was living in Vancouver in 2000, and was still residing in Canada at last report (in 2004), working as a government employee. He has been editor and information consultant for the online literary Seixo Review, and has written for publications in Canada, the United States, Portugal and Brazil.

The author, a literary critic, television personality and journalist, was born in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Alto Douro in 1962. He was editor of the review Ler, published by the Círculo de Leitores, and has to his credit at least eight novels, eight volumes of poetry, one volume of plays, and three of travels. Under the pseudonym António Sousa Homem he published Os ricos andam tolos (crónicas de um reaccionário minhoto). "Francisco José Viegas é o melhor romancista surgido nestes últimos tempos na literatura portuguesa." - Maria Teresa Horta, quoted on the back cover of the dust jacket of his detective novel, Um céu demasiado azul (2000).
