illuminating study by Rui Carita occupies pp. 9-29. The
facsimile of the original, previously unpublished
seventeenth-century manuscript, consisting of (5), 126, (1)
leaves, is well produced. It includes illustrations of 77
lovely watercolor plans of the principal fortifications of
the Portuguese Estado da India (including places in East
Africa, the Persian Gulf / Arabian Sea, India, and
present-day Malaysia, Indonesia, Timor, Macau, Manila, and
Formosa), with descriptive text, as well as illustrations
of charming watercolor portraits of 25 viceroys and
governors of India.
