awarded the Grande Prémio APE 2004. Born in Porto in 1953,
Baptista has published at least 16 volumes of poetry; he
has also contributed to and co-edited Poesia
digital: 7 poetas dos anos 80 (2002), in
addition to having edited two other anthologies of poems.
His unpublished "O claro interior" received the Prémio de
Poesia e Ficção de Almada, 2000 (Poesia). Poems by Amadeu
Baptista have been translated into Spanish, Catalan,
French, Italian, English, Romanian, Dutch, and
Hebrew.

Portugal in 1953, then going into exile in 1961). He has
produced several prize-winning poetical works:
Figuras
(1987), was
awarded the Prémio Inasset/Poesia; Sobre os
mortos (1991), won the
Grande Prémio de Poesia, APE. He has published at least 17
previous volumes of poetry, beginning in 1956, and also
received the Prémio de Poesia do Pen Club for

author has had published at least three previous volumes of
poetry, as well as another book for children. Another
play, De
rastos, awarded the
Grande Prémio de Teatro by the Associação Portuguesa de
Autores, and a collection of short stories were said to be
in the press.

de Freitas, born 1972, is a published literary critic and
art historian. He has published a brief essay about the
poetry of Al Berto, A noite dos
espelhos (1999),
Uma espécie

Helder (2001), as well
as at least thirteen volumes of his own poetry. He edited
at least one anthology of poems by other contemporary
authors. According to a friend whose opinion we respect,
Manuel de Freitas is the best twenty-first-century
Portuguese poet!

appears to be the author's first published volume of
poetry, and his second book. He published
Uma visita
a Bosch (2003), a
"romance" loosely based on Bosch's painting of
The Last
Judgment, which was his
first work of longer fiction, and probably his first book.
Born in Lisbon in 1969, a journalist since 1994, he worked
for the weekly newspaper Semanário;
in 1998 he moved to the magazine Arte
ibérica, where he
became editor-in-chief in 1999. That year he assumed the
same function at the Agenda
cultural de Lisboa. When this
book appeared he was directing the review
Magazine
artes. His poetry
appeared in the Diário de
notícias Jovem, and he has
written short stories for various publications, as well as
for the Internet.
