The
central characters of this novel are Ali, the wealthy,
cultured and refined son of a Roman mother and a
Greco-Byzantine father who had converted to Islam, and
Fatima, his wife. A number of themes are intertwined in the
narrative, including the inventive recipes of their cook
Matilde, Islamic art, perfumes, color theory,
anti-Semitism, fundamentalism, terror, erotic diversions,
and reflections on the great leaders of the day, such as
Afonso Henriques of Portugal, Afonso VII of Leon and
Castile, and others. On the whole, in 1146 there was still
an aura of tolerance among the three great religions of the
Iberian Peninsula. The following year Afonso Henriques
conquered Lisbon, and things began to change. The author
was born in Lisbon, 1942. With a doctorate in law from the
Universidade de Lisboa, he became a professor at the
Faculdade de Direito, but emigrated to Brazil in 1975,
where he has partaken of university life and has practiced
law. He has written a great deal in his specialty,
published both in Portugal and Brazil. This novel is his
first work of fiction.
