187. BOCAGE, [Manuel Maria l'Hedoux de Barbosa du (1765-1805)]. Obra completa. Volume I: Sonetos. Daniel Pires, ed. Porto: Caixotim, 2004. Obras Clássicas da Literatura Portuguesa, Século XVIII, 112. Lge. 8°, orig. prtd. wrps. 422 pp, (2 ll.), port. ISBN: 972-8651-46-5. $50.00

Daniel Pires has devoted his usual graceful erudition and serious hard work to the thorny problem of Bocage. Barbosa du Bocage (1765-1805), an accomplished Arcadian poet (known as Amano Sadino) with strong romantic tendencies, wrote a great deal of occasional verse. Bell thought he was capable of much greater things. The poet was an infantry soldier, but deserted at Damão and spent some time wandering through China, Macao and Goa before returning to Portugal. Tried and imprisoned on the basis of the anti-monarchical and anti-Catholic tone of his poems, when he was released he spent the rest of his life mostly doing translations, at which he was quite skilled. His work has continually remained in print, though often in questionable editions. Always popular, Bocage has been gaining the esteem of critics. The present groundbreaking edition is by far superior to anything that came before. As of February 2006, only the first, second and seventh volumes had appeared.

Anthology of poems published by Pessoa under his own name, as well as using the heteronyms Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis and Alvaro de Campos. Included as well is a "Carta de Fernando Pessoa sobre a génese dos heterónimos" (pp. [201]-211) as well as "Notas para a recordação do meu mestre Caeiro" (pp 212-6). There is a "Tabua bibliográfica" (pp. 217-8). The introduction by Casais Monteiro occupies pp. 7-26. This book was first published as Estudos sôbre a poesia de Fernando Pessoa (1958). The work was re-organized and enlarged by José Blanc de Portugal and published by the Imprensa Nacional in 1985 and again in 1999 under the present title, with correspondence between Casais Monteiro and Pessoa added which does not appear in the present edition. Adolfo Casais Monteiro (1908-1972), poet, literary critic and educator, with Leonardo Coimbra and Sant'Ana Dionísio, was part of the editorial board of Aguia (beginning with number 33), and in 1931 joined with José Régio and João Gaspar Simões in the editorship of Presença, to which he had contributed since 1928, and for which he continued as an editor until 1940, when that review ceased publication due to internal dissension. Forced into exile in 1954, he spent the rest of his life in Brazil. One of the very few who appreciated Pessoa during Pessoa's lifetime, along with Luís de Montalvor and João Gaspar Simões, Casais Monteiro was influential in promoting the reputation of Pessoa after Pessoa's death. On Casais Monteiro see Fernando J.B. Martinho in Machado, ed., Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 322-3; Dicionário cronológico de autores portugueses, IV, 360-3; Eugénio Lisboa in Biblos, III, 891-4; Saraiva and Lopes, História da literatura portuguesa, 1043, et passim.
