author was born in Luanda, 1974. This is his first novel. A
volume of short stories, Os
chouriços são todos para assar, was published
by Dom Quixote in 2003. He grew up in the suburbs of
Lisbon, and was living in Amsterdam at the time this volume
appeared.

novels set in that country. He has also written a work of
fantasy fiction. The publisher's "belt" expounds "A estreia

set in Moçambique during the colonial wars. The author was
born in Amadora, 1948. He fought in the colonial wars in
Moçambique, and while there collaborated in various
newspapers, such as Notícias de
Lourenço Marques,
República,

diário, and
Diário
popular. In 1973 he
was awarded first prize in a short story contest held by
the Diário
popular. Garcia
Barreto has written a number of children's books, and has
also published scholarly works about Portuguese literature
for children, the most significant of which was
Dicionário
de literatura infantil portuguesa (2002). His
juvenile novel Rubens e a
companhia do espanto em o caso da mitra
desaparecida (2005) received
the Prémio Literário de Sinta - Adolfo Simões Müller, for
children's and juvenile literature. Author of several
novels and collections of short stories for adults as well,
his A malta da
Rua dos Plátanos (1981) was
translated into Russian.

Marquês de Valle Flôr. The author was born in Quibala,
Kwanza Sul province, Angola, in 1959. After completing
secondary schooling in Angola, she attended the Faculdade
de Farmácia at the Universidade de Lisboa. At the time this
book appeared she was said to be in Luanda, completing her
work for a degree in Acção Social from the Universidade
Aberta de Lisboa. She has published two volumes of poetry
and a collection of short stories. Her poetry has also
appeared in two anthologies. This appears to be her first
work of longer fiction.

Marquês de Valle Flôr. Samuel Gonçalves, a physician
specializing in orthopedics and trauma, is a native of the
Island of Fogo, Cabo Verde. He studied in Cabo Verde and
Angola, and has practiced in Brazil and the United States.
At the time this book appeared he was working at the
Hospital Baptista de Sousa in São Vicente. This is his
first literary work.

Artur." The author of this novel was born in Lisbon, 1961.
At the time it was published he was working in England,
near Stonehenge. He has published books on computer
programming, as well as a collection of short
stories, A rainha da
noite. This is his
first novel.

historical novel dealing with the second-century A.D.
revolt of the mythical hero Viriato against Roman rule in
Lusitania was awarded the Prémio Dr. João Isabel. Sonia
Louro was born in France in 1976. She holds a degree in
marine biology from the Faculdade de Ciências do Mar e do
Ambiente, Universidade do Algarve. This appears to be her
first novel, and may very well be her first book.

Novel
about a wealthy coffee plantation and mine owner forced to
return to Portugal from Angola after 1974. Born in
Montalegre in 1956, the author has published a number of
volumes of plays, as well as a volume of poetry. This
appears to be his fourth or fifth novel.

published Coimbra 1948, the present volume is based on the
text of the "definitive" seventh edition, Lisbon: Sá da
Costa, 1981. Some errors in that edition are said to have
been corrected. Born in Belém do Pará in 1921, the author's
parents, Portuguese emigrants, returned with their son in
1923 to live in Gândara. From 1972 until his death in
Lisbon in 1981 he devoted himself completely to literature.
Between 1942 and 1977 he published nine volumes of poetry;
from 1943 to 1978 there were five novels; he also published
a book of "crónicas" in 1971.

about the chaotic conditions in Angola on the eve of
independence appeared in January 2006. The Angolan-born
author was awarded the Prémio Camões for the totality of
his literary output. The Prémio Camões was described by the
publisher as "the most important literary prize in the
Portuguese language." The author of this novel has also

author (b. Covilhã, 1947), has written at least ten
previous books, most if not all fiction. His first,

seios de novélia (1968, 3rd ed.
1996), was awarded the Prémio de Novelística Almeida
Garrett in 1968. He has also published three books jointly
with Alface (pseud., i.e. João Alfacinha da Silva).

Independente. She worked
for Sábado,
in the United States for Time
magazine,
returning to Portugal to write for Expresso.
She worked in television, for Marie
Claire,
Elle,
and the daily newspaper Público.
She wrote for Expo '98, and produced a brief biography of
Vasco Santana (1999), as well as a novlla
Cruz das
almas (2004). At the
time this present novella appeared, she was editor
of Egoísta,
a post held for several years.

Reis-Sá,
born Vila Nova da Famalicão, 1977, was judged the winner of
the III Jogos Florais de Vila Nova de Familicão. He was a
founder, and at the time this book appeared was director of
the publishing house Quasi Edições. He has published four
volumes of poetry, collaborated in and edited significant
anthologies. This appears to be his first published work of
longer fiction.

Awarded
the Prémio Literário Almeida Firmino, this novel is set in
the 1980s in Portugal. Virgílio is a militant in the Forças
Populares-25 de Abril. He takes part in an action which
results in the death of a wealthy businessman from the
North, José Trinan, and gravely injures one of the man's
daughters, Dulce. João Pedro, Vergílio's eighteen-year-old
son, reveals his father's activities to a judge. Later,
João Pedro's path crosses that of Dulce. They fall
passionately in love. The author was born in Coimbra, 1956.
The present work is his third novel. At the time this book
appeared he was teaching high school. He has also taught at
Portsmouth University in the United Kingdom, and Stockholm.
While there he translated into English the acceptance
speech of José Saramago for the Nobel Prize in
literature. D.
Sebastião chega sempre a horas (1999), the
author's first novel, is based on the fantasy that the
revolution of 25th April 1974 had been defeated by a
counter-revolution on the 26th. Twenty-five years later,
the masses shout "26 de Abril, sempre!" Next to the
Jeronimos monastery is the Centro Salazar.
Novas do
achamento do inferno (2001), his
second novel, is set in the late fifteenth and early
sixteenth centuries, featuring the voyage of Pedro Alvares
Cabral to India via Brazil.

Deonísio da Silva was born in Siderópolis, Santa Catarina,
Brazil, in 1948. Novelist, short story writer and essayist,
at the time this volume appeared he was teaching at the
Universidade de São Carlos, São Paulo, where he directed
the University Press, and created chairs in the literatures
of all Portuguese speaking countries.

volumes of poetry, four of nonfiction essays, and a novel.
Born in Lisbon, 1978, this appears to be the first book for
which he has used his real name.
