Facsimile reprint of the revised, amplified version, in three volumes, which appeared in 1800. A single volume had appeared in 1793, covering the history in Portugal of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem to the mid-thirteenth century, with considerable documentation. After 1309-10 the order was also called the Knights of Rhodes and, after its transference to the island of Malta in 1529, the Knights of Malta. The first volume of the present edition covers events up to the death of King D. Sancho II; the second volume continues to the death of D. Dinis; while the third volume continues until shortly prior to publication in 1800. See Innocencio IV, 233; Pinto de Mattos (1970) p. 298; Figanière 1511.

Although critical, it seems to be a serious and fair-minded attempt to evaluate this most important figure. The book has created a sensation in Portugal. It is well-researched, and has a decent index, as well as a two-page index of false names and pseudonyms.

First published 1992, the second edition appeared in 1997. This is a complete manuscript by Pessoa discovered within his "espólio." It was written in English, titled Lisbon: What the Tourist Should See - here the original English and a Portuguese translation by Maria Amélia Santos Gomes are presented on facing pages. The preface is also provided in both English and Portuguese. This tourist guide, reflecting Pessoa's literary, artistic, and architectural interests, as well as his love for Lisbon, was to be part of a projected series of works intended to fight against Portugal's "demotion" to a less-than-European and civilized status in the world.
