First
of a projected three volumes of this unauthorized biography
of the longtime leader of the Portuguese Communist Party,

critical, it seems to be a serious and fair-minded attempt

created a sensation in Portugal. It is well-researched, and
has a decent index, as well as a two-page index of false

2 ll. adv.), folding plan. ISBN: 972-24-0830-5. $25.00
First
published 1992, the second edition appeared in 1997. This
is a complete manuscript by Pessoa discovered within his
"espólio." It was written in English, titled
Lisbon:
What the Tourist Should See - here the
original English and a Portuguese translation by Maria
Amélia Santos Gomes are presented on facing pages. The
preface is also provided in both English and Portuguese.
This tourist guide, reflecting Pessoa's literary, artistic,
and architectural interests, as well as his love for
Lisbon, was to be part of a projected series of works
intended to fight against Portugal's "demotion" to a
less-than-European and civilized status in the world.
