complete edition in Portuguese. First published in Latin in
1571, there were no fewer than seven sixteenth-century
editions, followed by editions of 1614 and 1794. The work
appeared in French, Paris 1582, and there was a partial
translation into Portuguese by António Jotta da Cruz
Figueiredo, with a preface by Luís de Almeida Braga, Lisbon
1944. D. Jerónimo Osório was often called the "Portuguese
Cicero." Useful, heavily annotated introductory material
(pp. 9-24) is followed by the annotated Portuguese
translation.
