pp., illus. in color. One of 1,000 copies. ISBN:
972-98444-4-5. $40.00
Excellent
work, unfortunately little-known outside of the picturesque
town of Sobral de Monte Agraço, situated between Bucelas
and Torres Vedras, about 50 kilometers north of Lisbon. The
founder of the house of Sobral was Joaquim Inácio da Cruz
Sobral, 1 Morgado do Sobral (also after 1768 2 Morgado da
Alagoa? 1725-1781; born and died in Lisbon). He had an
engraved bookplate, and we have seen evidence that he was a
keen bibliophile. On the bookplate, see Avelar
Duarte, Ex-libris
portugueses heráldicos 678; also
Henrique de Avellar in Arte do
ex-libris, fascículo 91,
vol. XII, pp. 1-9. Cf. Grande
enciclopédia XXIX, 384-5 for
a slightly different version of the arms and some
additional information about the family.

as a chronological index.

A
substantially revised edition of one of the two major
Portuguese-language encyclopedias; this is the only major
Portuguese-language encyclopedia which is up-to-date. It is
now complete in 29 volumes; the 29th volume includes a
brief "Aditamento" as well as a useful 84-page index of
contributors, in triple columns. Probably for commercial
reasons, the later volumes are a bit less exhausive in
their coverage, with the work coming to a screeching halt
with volume 29 covering the letters Valóni-Zyl; by
comparison, the Grande
enciclopédia portuguesa e brasileira
took more than
three volumes to cover the same territory. The original
version of the present work, Verbo-Enciclopédia
Luso-Brasileira de Cultura, consisted of
18 volumes published between 1963 and 1976. Three
supplementary volumes were published in 1991. Each volume
of the present version consists of over 700 pages (with the
exception of volume 26, which has exactly 700 pages,
including the preliminary and supplementary leaves), with
the main body of text in double columns. To our taste there
is too much information not specific to Portugal or other
Portuguese-speaking countries easily found in
English-language reference works as well as in other
non-Portuguese references; nevertheless, this is an
indispensable reference tool, especially important for its
treatment of Portuguese literature, art, and other cultural
developments of recent years. Contributors include many of
the best Portuguese authorities. The general editor is João
Bigotte Chorão.

Conventionally
referred to as "Innocêncio", this collection remains the
standard, essential bibliography for the study of books by
Portuguese and (to a somewhat lesser extent) Brazilian
authors, writing in the Portuguese language, whose work was
published up to the early twentieth century. The work ranks
with those of Brunet, Graesse, Salvá, and Sabin as one of
the foremost bibliographies produced during the nineteenth
century; its annotations regarding the scholarly and
commercial value of the books listed have rarely been
surpassed, while a wide range of knowledge is wonderfully
displayed. Books by Portuguese authors writing in Spanish,
Latin, etc. do not come under the plan of the work;
however, many such titles are included. Despite some
shortcomings regarding Brazilian authors as we get into the
second half of the nineteeth century, Borba de Moraes
in Bibliographia
Brasiliana (1983), II,
974, wrote that "Innocêncio's work is indispensable for
Luso-Brazilian studies." Originally published from 1858 to
1927 (the date of publication for the first edition of
the Aditamentos),
the valuable Guia
bibliográfico first appeared
in 1958 in an edition of 500 copies. The first nine volumes
were written by Innocéncio Francisco da Silva. Volumes ten
through twenty are a continuation of Innocêncio's efforts,
based partly on manuscripts he left, by Pedro Venceslau de
Brito Aranha, with the collaboration of Joaquim de Araújo
in volume seventeen. Volume twenty-one, devoted to
Alexandre Herculano, was written by J.J. Gomes de Brito.
Volume twenty-two, written by Brito Ananha, was published
posthumously and revised by Gomes de Brito and Alvaro
Neves. The final three volumes consist of the
indispensable Guia
Bibliográfico by Ernest
Soares, the Aditamentos
by
Martinho da Fonseca, and the Subsídios
para um dicionário de pseudónimos by Martinho da
Fonseca, with a preface by Teophilo Braga. The bindings
(probably from the period ca. 1987 through 2002, perhaps a
few somewhat earlier) and dust jackets (probably from after
1995 to 2002) are uniform. See Alvaro Manuel
Machado, Dicionário
de literatura portuguesa, p. 454; Maria
da Graça Pericão in Biblos,
IV, 38-40.

Presença, 1996. Lge. 8°, publ. prtd. bds. 567 pp., double
cols. ISBN: 972-23-2084-X. $60.00
Most
useful reference work, covering authors and literary
periods from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Contemporary authors are emphasized, without sacrificing
treatment of earlier ones. Besides the editor, there are 68
contributors, among them Ana Hatherly, Artur Anselmo, Clara
Rocha, Fernando Guimarães, Helder Macedo, João Bigotte
Chorão, João Medina, Joel Serrão, José-Augusto França, José
Augusto Seabra, José V. de Pina Martins, Maria José Palla,
Maria Leonor Carvalhão Buescu, Nuno Júdice, Oscar Lopes,
Teresa Rita Lopes, and Urbano Tavares Rodrigues. While
obviously not an absolutely original work, a vast number of
the articles manage to display a fresh approach to their
subject, synthesizing the latest research. We find this
volume of much value in our own work, and keep reference
copies handy both in Lisbon and New
York.
