This interesting and useful guide rates wines from Portugal (about 2,000), as well as a brief section on wines available in Portugal from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Chile, Australia, and New Zealand, arranged by Portuguese regions and by distributors of imported wines, listing those available from each source. At the beginning of each regional section is an essay describing characteristics, difficulties, etc. Each wine is given a rating from 50 to 100. There are ratings as well of quality in relation to price. An extensive list of producers and distributors, giving names, addresses, telephone, fax, websites, and e-mail addresses (pp. 421-55) is followed by ample indexes (pp. [459]-491). At the beginning of the book are comments about the state of the market and the state of the art of winemaking.
