hospital emergency rooms. His play Os pés no

subsequently in other positions dealing with urban planning
and renewal. His novella about a war declared by the

was the author's first work of fiction, originally
published by the Livraria Editora da Casa do Estudante do
Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, 1949. It appeared again, published
in Lisbon by Arcádia, 1961, and in a revised form, Lisbon:
Editorial Estampa, 1961. This fourth edition includes a
brief note by the author written in 2004 which did not
appear in any of the previous editions. It also includes a
longer piece, dated 1979, which presumably appeared in the
third edition only. The essay by Jorge de Sena is dated
1950, while that of Eduardo Lourenço is dated 1979. After a
long absence, the distinguished art historian José-Augusto
França has recently returned to writing fiction; since 2002
he has produced three new novels and a collection of
stories, in principle to be followed by three additional
novels and a volume containing two novellas. See Alvaro

historical novel of the eighteenth century, about the
construction of the Aqueduto de Aguas Livres. Born in
Coimbra, 1969, he received a degree in Biophysical
Engineering from the University of Evora. In 1995 he turned
to journalism, writing for Expresso,
Fórum
Ambiente, and
the Diário de
Notícias. At the time
this novel appeared he was working for the review
Grande
reportagem. He has
received three journalism awards, and in 2003 was awarded
the Premio Nacional do Ambiente Fernando
Pereira.
