The title on the front wrapper reads O quadrado {e outros contos}. The author, born in Agueda in 1936, has a vast poetical output, awarded a good number of prestigious literary prizes. A long-time left-wing socialist deputy to the National Assembly, he was politically active against the regime prior to 1974, spending time in prison and exile. At the time of this writing [November 2005] he is in the beginning phases of a campaign for the presidency of Portugal. The author's novel A gata e a fábula was awarded the Prémio Camilo Castelo Branco in 1960 (it achieved at least six editions, the most recent published in 2005). The author's ninth volume of fiction, Dramaticamente vestida de negro (1994) was awarded the Prémio Pen Clube Português, Romance; she won the Prémio Nacional de Novelística in 1971 for Lourenço é nome de jogral (2nd ed., 1991); was awarded both the Prémio da Crítica and the Troféu da Revista Mulher in 1987 for Esta noite sonhei com Brueghel (4th ed., 1989); and won the Prémio Eça de Queirós in 1991 for Festa em casa de flores (1990). The author is a journalist, born in Porto, 1964. This was his first novel, originally published by Contexto, 1992. It was the winner in Portugal of the Prémio Jovens Talentos, sponsored by the United Nations. In 1997 he received the Prémio Especial of the Jury for the International Festival of FIGRA, in France, for investigative reporting about hospital emergency rooms. His play Os pés no arame opened in Lisbon in 2002. His second novel, A casa quieta, was published by Dom Quixote earlier in 2005.

The other stories collected in the volume appeared in Música das esferras, Mais marés que marinheiros, Morina, and Um sinal dos tempos. The author, born in Lisbon in 1960, has published well over 30 titles since 1983, including fiction, poetry, essays, juvenile literature, and scientific works addressed to the more intelligent sectors of the general public. Brief novel whose action shifts from conservative nineteenth-century Minho to present day New York, Lisbon, Porto and Furnas, in the Açores. The author (b. Oliveira de Azeméis, 1939), former deputy in the National Legislature (1976-1983), worked as architect of the Gabinete de Urbanização da Câmara Municipal do Porto (1967-1976), and subsequently in other positions dealing with urban planning and renewal. His novella about a war declared by the municipal authorities against pigeons, from the pigeons' point of view, A revolta das pombas, appeared in 2001. A ruína (crónica romanceada), was published by Caixotim in 2004.

She spent her first seven years in Damão, then the next seven in Angola; she has lived in Portugal since 1964, residing in Almada since 1965. A physician specializing in internal and family medicine, she has produced more than twenty publications based on clinical and laboratory work. Her first work of fiction, a short story, was written when she was fourteen. She has contributed poetry, essays and stories to newspapers and reviews, and previously published six literary works.

This was the author's first work of fiction, originally published by the Livraria Editora da Casa do Estudante do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, 1949. It appeared again, published in Lisbon by Arcádia, 1961, and in a revised form, Lisbon: Editorial Estampa, 1961. This fourth edition includes a brief note by the author written in 2004 which did not appear in any of the previous editions. It also includes a longer piece, dated 1979, which presumably appeared in the third edition only. The essay by Jorge de Sena is dated 1950, while that of Eduardo Lourenço is dated 1979. After a long absence, the distinguished art historian José-Augusto França has recently returned to writing fiction; since 2002 he has produced three new novels and a collection of stories, in principle to be followed by three additional novels and a volume containing two novellas. Born Porto 1943, the author worked for the Porto Policia Judiciaria, retiring in 2001 as an inspector-chefe.

He has also written on the history of dance. At the time this volume appeared he was President of the Portuguese National Commission for UNESCO. He was formerly Minister of Culture, Cultural attaché to the embassies in Rome, Washington and Stockholm. With Artur Portela he co-founded the Jornal novo, and was founder and director of the review La danza italiana.

Historical novel centering on the Jesuit Father Gabriel Malagrida and the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755. This is the second work of fiction by the author. His first was the novel Nove mil passos (2004), another historical novel of the eighteenth century, about the construction of the Aqueduto de Aguas Livres. Born in Coimbra, 1969, he received a degree in Biophysical Engineering from the University of Evora. In 1995 he turned to journalism, writing for Expresso, Fórum Ambiente, and the Diário de Notícias. At the time this novel appeared he was working for the review Grande reportagem. He has received three journalism awards, and in 2003 was awarded the Premio Nacional do Ambiente Fernando Pereira.
