Facsimile reprint of the original 1741-59 edition. The author was "incontestably the greatest Portuguese bibliographer. His Bibliotheca lusitana forms the basis of all Portuguese bibliography . . . The confidence with which he wrote and the exactitude of the biographical facts make these four folios an indispensable reference work even today" (Borba de Moraes [1983] II, 969). Because it covers Portuguese authors writing in Portuguese or any other language, the Bibliotheca lusitana is not superseded by Innocêncio, who deals mainly with works in Portuguese. Cf. Excellent library catalogue. The main body of the work describes in detail 1 incunable, 111 sixteenth-century works printed in Portugal, and 47 sixteenth-century works printed outside of Portugal (including 10 from 5 different Spanish cities). There are indexes of authors, titles, printing places, printers, chronology of impressions, and marks of provenance, as well as concordances. The books were originally acquired by the illustrious Portuguese impresario and man of immense culture, Fausto José Amaral de Figueiredo (1911-1971).

Library catalogue continuing the excellent work of Júlio Caio Velloso. As with the previous work, there is a substantial and interesting introduction. The catalogue describes in detail 280 seventeenth- and eighteenth-century titles. There are indexes of authors, titles, printing places, printers, chronology of impressions, illustrators, binders, and marks of provenance, as well as concordances. The books were originally acquired by the illustrious Portuguese impresario and man of immense culture, Fausto José Amaral de Figueiredo (1911-1971).

Notwithstanding the incorrect cataloguing of the Library of Congress, this useful dictionary of antiquarian book trade terminology is in Portuguese, not in Spanish. We advise all libraries which own this book and use Library of Congress cataloguing to correct their entries.

This interesting exhibition catalogue contains texts by Carlos Alvar and Maria Fernanda de Abreu. There is an anthology of three nineteenth-century critical essays on Cervantes and Don Quixote, by Latino Coelho, Manuel Pinheiro Chagas and Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho. The actual catalogue lists 104 titles (pp. [179]-229). There are indexes of iconography and names.
