The first edition appeared in 1965. The author's son, João Maria de Freitas Branco, prepared an improved second edition (1995) based on notes left by his father. A third edition also appeared in 1995. This fourth edition contains João Maria de Freitas Branco's preface to the second edition, plus his new preface to the present edition. It also contains revised and expanded notes, bibliography and indexes (pp. 323 - 42; 393 - 434), as well as the completely new section mentioned on the title page by José Eduardo Rocha (pp. 343 - 92).

Son of the the organist for the Sé cathedral in Coimbra, Carlos Seixas was born in 1703. He enjoyed a brief but brilliant musical career, dying at age 38. The editor provides an introduction, followed by five essays, four in Portuguese, one in Spanish, by António Filipe Pimentel, Manuel Carlos de Brito, José López - Calo, José Eduardo Martins, and Abílio Queirós. The exhibition catalogue occupies pp. 83 - 148.
