The original version, which appeared in 1982, was awarded the Prémio de "Ensaio" of the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores in 1980. A novelist, dramatist, poet and literary critic, with a profound interest in the relationship between computers and literature, the author has also written stories for children. He was on the faculty of the Universidade Fernando Pessoa, Porto, where he founded the Centro de Estudos de Texto Informático e Ciberliteratura. At the time this volume appeared, he was on the faculty of the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo, Instituto Politécnico do Porto.

The author was born in Porto in 1974. He has written a novel, Do sol (2004), a volume with very short stories, Para averiguar do seu grau de pureza (1996), another with three pieces of short fiction and two screenplays,2 Filmes e Algo de Algodão (1999); three previous plays, Universos e frigoríficos (1997) and Arranha - céus (1999), and Escrever, falar: dois diálogos e um monólogo (2002); and a novella, Azul - turquesa, which first appeared in June 1998; a second edition came out in July the same year. He has also written a volume of impressions of Japan: Livro usado (numa viagem ao Japão) (2001).

The author has had volumes of Crónicas italianas, and Novas crónicas italianas published, in 1984 and 1994 (awarded the Grande Prémio da APE), as well as another volume with literary criticism, plays, short fiction, and novels. He lived 15 years in Italy, where he was posted as a diplomat, and which he considers a second home. He was also posted to São Tomé e Príncipe, Israel, and Morocco. His essays have been translated into Italian, and a novel, novella, short stories and literary essays have been translated into Hebrew. A founder of the review O tempo e o modo, from 1962 to 1974 Poppe was literary critic for the Diário popular; he collaborated in Colóquio, O Século, Diário de Notícias, Jornal de Letras, Nova Renascença, Independente and Rumo. Since 1978 he has been a permanent contributor to the Jornal de Notícias.

Volume I contains an introduction by the editor (pp. 9 - 21). On the engineer, poet, and playwright Jaime Salazar Sampaio (b.
