Born in Beira, Moçambique, in 1955, Mia Couto was editor of the review Tempo and of the newspaper Noticias de Maputo. His first novel, Terra somnambula, appeared in 1991; a second, Estórias abensonhadas, followed in 1994 (5th ed., 2000). A Varanda do Frangipani (1996, 5th ed., 2000), has achieved both critical and commercial success. He has published several collections of short stories, at least one of which - Vozes anoitecidas - was translated into English and published by Heinemann; his books have been translated as well into Spanish, French, Italian, German, Swedish, Norwegian, and Dutch. He has also published a book of poetry. The Prémio Vergílio Ferreira was awarded to Mia Couto in 1999 for his work as a whole. Danuta Wojciechowska, born in Quebec, 1960, has lived in Lisbon since 1984. In 2003 she revieved the Prémio Nacional de Ilustração; she was the Portuguese candidate for the Hans Christian Andersen prize in 2004. This book had an initial printing of 15,000 copies.

An architect who never practiced his profession, the author has published a number of volumes of poetry for adults, has edited and co - edited important anthologies, and has written books for children. João Fanha, his son, is a painter and animator.

The author was born in Amadora, 1948. He fought in the colonial wars in Moçambique, and while there collaborated in various newspapers, such as Notícias de Lourenço Marques, República, O diário, and Diário popular. In 1973 he was awarded first prize in a short story contest held by the Diário popular. Garcia Barreto has written a number of children's books, and has also published scholarly works about Portuguese literature for children. His juvenile novel Rubens e a companhia do espanto em o caso da mitra desaparecida (2005) received the Prémio Literário de Sinta - Adolfo Simões Müller, for children's and juvenile literature. Author of several novels and collections of short stories for adults as well, his A malta da Rua dos Plátanos (1981) was translated into Russian.

The author, a teacher and journalist, was born in Lisbon in 1960. He has written at least three novels for adults. One of them, A montanha russa de Deus (2001), is about "sex, violence and money". He has also written children's books, student manuals, song lyrics, plays, and fictional scripts for television.

The author's A dúvida melódica was awarded the Prémio de Poesia Cidade da Amadora, 1993. Born in Cascais in 1951, he has published at least 33 volumes of poetry, a number of which have also been awarded literary prizes, including the Prémio Eça de Queiroz - Município de Lisboa (twice), the Prémio Gulbenkian, and others. See Machado, Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, p. 266. From January 1994 until January 2002 the author was Vereador da Cultura for the Câmara Municipal de Cascais.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885 - 1954) was Portuguese consul at Bordeaux from 1938 to 1940. When France fell, he issued 30,000 visas to Jews and other minorities fleeing the Nazis, contrary to instructions from Salazar, who, in addition to being Chief of Government, was also Foreign Minister. Sousa Mendes was dismissed from the diplomatic core, disgraced, and died in poverty.

Ondjaki's stories, E se amanhã o medo, contos (2005) were awarded the Prémio Literário Sagrada Esperança, 2004, and the Prémio Literário António Paulouro, 2004. The author was born in Luanda in 1977, has published at least eight books (at least two novels), and is represented in several anthologies. Danuta Wojciechowska, born in Quebec, 1960, has lived in Lisbon since 1984. In 2003 she revieved the Prémio Nacional de Ilustração; she was the Portuguese candidate for the Hans Christian Andersen prize in 2004.

Born in 1970, the author published his first work, Livro da dança, in 2001. His Senhor Valéry (2002) was awarded the Prémio Branquinho da Fonseca by the weekly newspaper Expresso and the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Investigações, Novalis, poesia (2002) was awarded the Prémio Revelação de Poesia APE / IPLG, 1999. A volume of poems, O homem ou é tonto ou é mulher (2002), was adapted for the stage at the Teatro Aberto during the "encontro do Novíssimo Teatro de Expressão Portuguesa e Alemã" by the Artistas Unidos n' A Capital. His poetry has appeared in anthologies in Portugal, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as in English and American reviews, while his prose has been translated into Italian, Hungarian, Spanish and French. He has also been published in Brazil.
