First published 1959. The author's Outrora agora (1996; 2nd ed. 1997), was awarded the Grande Prémio de Romance e Novela da APE, 1996 as well as the Prémio da Crítica de 1996. Born 1926 at Ançã, Cantanhede, teacher, journalist, director of programs for RTP, Augusto [José de Freitas] Abelaira was also editor of the reviews Seara nova and Vida mundial. He was awarded the Prémio Ricardo Malheiros by the Academia das Ciências for the novel As boas intenções (1963), and the Prémio Cidade de Lisboa for his novel Sem tecto entre ruínas (1979). He published a volume of short stories, three volumes of plays, and ten previous novels, most of which have gone through multiple editions. Jorge [Manuel Russo] Barroso was born in São Tiogo de Rio de Moinhos, concelho de Borba, 1965. He founded the Livraria Pedra Filosofal in Rio de Moinhos. This novel is his first book. He is said to have written two additional novels and three volumes of poetry.

Novella set in mid-twentieth-century Alentejo. The author was born in Santo Aleixo da Restauração, Concelho de Moura, 1943. At the time this book appeared, he was living in Serpa. He was a member of the Assembleia Municipal de Serpa, and was part of the editorial board of the review Archivo de Beja. He has published two previous books.

The author has published at least 20 volumes of fiction, some of which were awarded literary prizes, as well as at least 5 volumes of poetry, two each of theater and criticism, 5 volumes of essays and travels, a photobiography of António Nobre, and an anthology. He has also translated William Beckford and Virginia Woolf, and wrote, under his real name, a book on illiteracy in Portugal. Poet, critic, and author of fiction, the author was born in Mexilhoeira Grande, Algarve, 1949. Having received a Ph.D. in medieval literature from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 1989, he has been responsible for critical editions of the Sonetos of Antero de Quental, and the Cancioneiro de D. Dinis. His poetry has received the Prize of the Pen Clube in 1985, the Prémio D. Dinis of the Fundação Casa de Mateus in 1990, and that of the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores in 1994. His novel Por todos os séculos was awarded the Prémio Bordalo by the Casa da Imprensa. His fiction and poetry have been widely translated into Spanish, and some of his work exists as well in Italian, French, and English. The author was born in Benguela, 1932 and died in Huambro, 1977. He was a journalist, poet and agricultural engineer, imprisoned by Portuguese authorities for anti-colonial activism.

This collection of fifteen stories was first published 1996. The author was awarded the Prémio Revelação de Ensaio by the Secretaria de Estado da Cultura and by the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores, 1980, for her Os amantes, ou a arte da novela em David Mourão Ferreira. She has also written another volume of literary criticism about David Mourão Ferreira, a novel, and two collections of short stories.

Collection of eleven sometimes humorous, sometimes melancholy, sensual short stories. First published 1998 by A Mar Arte, a small publisher in Coimbra, the original edition contained only five stories. According to the author's preface, the stories were completely rewritten for this edition. João de Mancelos has also published in the realm of fiction Veleiros do tempo cósmico: a fantástica odisseia dos rebeldes em luta pela libertação do Império das Estrelas (1988), and Foi amanhã (1999), a collection of science-fiction short stories. He has also written four volumes of poetry, Entre Ausência e Esquecimento (1991); A oeste deste céu (1992); O Labor das Marés (1995); and Línguas de Fogo (2001).

The author of these short stories was born on the island of São Miguel in the Azores (1949). He took part in the Glacial literary movement in Angra between 1969 and 1973. His novel Gente feliz com lágrimas (first published 1988; 18 editions at last count) won the most important literary prizes for the year 1989. Melo has published at least 22 volumes, including 5 novels, 6 collections of stories, 1 volume of poetry, two anthologies, 5 collections of essays, and a travel book about the Açores.

Born in Lisbon, 1945, the author was a student of Vergílio Ferreira and Mário Dionísio at the Liceu Camões. He published poetry in the Diário de Lisboa Juvenil, and contributed short stories to the Diário popular (in 1969 his "O protesto" had its final sentence removed by the Comissão de Censura of the Estado Novo). In Moçambique he worked as a journalist for the Notícias da Beira, publishing there poems, stories and essays, and mixing with intellectuals such as José Craveirinha, Rui Knopffli, and Malangatana Valente. Returning to Portugal in 1970, in 1989 he moved to Brussels as an employee of the European Commission. This appears to be his first novel.

Novel based on the legendary Branca Dias, a matriarch of sixteenth-century Pernambuco, one of the first female plantation owners in Brazil. Originally from Viana do Castelo, after being denounced by the Inquisition in Lisbon, she embarked for Brazil with her seven children. There she reunited with her husband, Diogo Fernandes, living between Camaragibe and Olinda, where four additional children were born. When the Inquisition made its initial visit to Brazil toward the end of the sixteenth century, her children and grandchildren were arrested, accused of having reverted to Judaism. Branca Dias was burned in an auto-de-fé in the Rossio. The present novel consists of the reminiscences of Branca Dias, including scenes of her upbringing in Minho, her old age in Olinda, her life as a sugar plantation owner, the construction of her great house in Camaragibe and another house on the Rua dos Palhares in Olinda. She recalls Duarte Coelho, the first donatário of Pernambuco, the death of Pedro Alvares da Madeira, eaten by the Tupinambás, as well as the Condomblé of the African slaves, and much more. The author's novel A visão de Túndalo por Eça de Queirós (2000) was awarded the Prémio Literário Ler by the Fundação Círculo de Leitores. The author was previously awarded the Prémio de Revelação APE / IPLB, Ensaio Literário / 1995. Born in Lisbon in 1953, Miguel Real has published a number of works of literary history and criticism, as well as secondary school literary manuals, and a novel in which Plato, near death, confesses to having invented Socrates, using an honored old slave as his model.
