Debates, 2003. Lusografias, 12. 8°, orig. illus. wrps. 170
pp. , (1 l.). ISBN: 972-759-654-1. $28.00
Novel
based on the legendary Branca Dias, a matriarch of
sixteenth-century Pernambuco, one of the first female
plantation owners in Brazil. Originally from Viana do
Castelo, after being denounced by the Inquisition in
Lisbon, she embarked for Brazil with her seven children.
There she reunited with her husband, Diogo Fernandes,
living between Camaragibe and Olinda, where four additional
children were born. When the Inquisition made its initial
visit to Brazil toward the end of the sixteenth century,
her children and grandchildren were arrested, accused of
having reverted to Judaism. Branca Dias was burned in an
auto-de-fé in the Rossio. The present novel consists of the
reminiscences of Branca Dias, including scenes of her
upbringing in Minho, her old age in Olinda, her life as a
sugar plantation owner, the construction of her great house
in Camaragibe and another house on the Rua dos Palhares in
Olinda. She recalls Duarte Coelho, the first donatário of
Pernambuco, the death of Pedro Alvares da Madeira, eaten by
the Tupinambás, as well as the Condomblé of the African
slaves, and much more. The author's novel
A visão de
Túndalo por Eça de Queirós (2000) was

Leitores. The author was previously awarded the Prémio de
