Another
highly significant volume in an important new multi-volume
history. Besides the editor, the team which compiled this
volume consisted of Benedita Maria Duque Vieira, Duarte
Jorge, Fernando Figueiredo, Isabel M.R. Mendes Drumond
Braga, José-Augusto França, Maria José Borges, Paulo
Drumond Braga, Paulo Lopes Matos, and Pedro Teixeira
Mesquita. As with previous volumes in the series, the
critical apparatus is impressive. There are extensive,
useful footnotes, a huge bibliography (pp. 621-92), an
analytical index (pp. 693-757), and various other smaller
indexes at the end. The series, under the general direction
of Joel Serrão and A. H. de Oliveira Marques, is now
projected to 13 volumes. As would be expected, the series
in general, and this volume in particular, has a fresh,
multi-disciplinary approach, emphasizing political and
social institutions, the economy, daily life, as well as
culture and the arts. Besides this volume, volumes 1, 2, 3,
4, 5, 7, 11, and 12 have been published to date. They are,

documents are included here, with references that will
allow the investigator to consult the originals in the
Torre do Tombo.
