The author, novelist, essayist and poet, was born in Braga, 1932. She has lived in England, France, Angola, Goa, Macau and Peking. Her work has been translated into Polish, French, Hungarian, Catalan, Spanish, Italian, German, Serbo-Croatian, Japanese and Chinese; it has been awarded numerous literary prizes, the most noteworthy being the Prémio Eça de Queiroz for her novel Nocturno em Macau (1991), the Grande Prémio ITF de Literatura, and the Prémio Ricardo do Malheiros of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon for her collection of short stories Amor e morte (1970). The author was born in Angola, 1952. He worked for the Diário de Luanda, and was editor-in-chief of the Jornal de Angola. Since 1986 he has been a member of the Central Committee of the M.P.L.A. In 1991 he was Vice-minister of Foreign Relations; at the time this book appeared he was Minister.
