1932. She has lived in England, France, Angola, Goa, Macau
and Peking. Her work has been translated into Polish,
French, Hungarian, Catalan, Spanish, Italian, German,
Serbo-Croatian, Japanese and Chinese; it has been awarded
numerous literary prizes, the most noteworthy being the
Prémio Eça de Queiroz for her novel Nocturno em
Macau (1991), the
Grande Prémio ITF de Literatura, and the Prémio Ricardo do
Malheiros of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon for her
collection of short stories Amor e
