author, born in the Vila de Cacujães, has published at
least nine volumes of plays, one of which,
Um
gira-discos na floresta, won the Prémio
Inatel, 1991, and the Prémio Comp. Eça de Queirós, 1992.
Another, O
testamento do Rei D. João Segundo, was awarded the
Grande Prémio de Teatro Inatel in 1998. According to the
publisher's blurb on the rear cover, Manuel Córrego was
awarded this same prize a second time in 2003 (for the
present book?). His first work of fiction, the
novel, Campo de
feno com papoilas, was awarded the
Prémio Ler/Fundação do Círculo de Leitores, 1998. A volume
of short stories appeared in 2001. At the time the present
volume appeared the author was working with the Núcleo
Amador de Teatro de S. João da Madeira, where he was
living, and editing the weekly newspaper
O regional.

Born
Porto, 1975, the author was a doctoral candidate in
twentieth-century Portuguese literature at the Faculdade de
Letras of the Universidade do Porto. At the time this book
appeared he was docente de literatura portuguesa at the
same Faculdade. He has published two previous plays, and
two novels; his essays have appeared in literary reviews
such as Relâmpago,
Ciberkiosk, Jornal de Letras, A phala,
and
Século de
ouro. Diverse
theatrical pieces by him have been performed in Porto,
Coimbra, Bratislava, Nice and Solonica.

worked in the theater as an actor, director, and author
since 1973. He has also taught theater. Of a dozen texts of
his which have been performed (five of which he
co-authored), this is the first to be published.

The
author was born in Moçambique in 1973. He attended the
acting course at the Instituto Franco-Português in Lisbon,
and continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music
and Drama, London, obtaining a Master in Arts degree at
King's College and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. This
play, apparently his first book, is about a young man's
struggle to discover his identity. He returns to the seat
of a family of returned colonists seeking reconciliation
with the colonial past; this proves impossible and results
in a murder. Pages 129-33 consist of a self-interview of
Guilherme Mendonça.

The
author, born in São João da Madeira, 1959, and published
for the first time at age 14, obtained his first literary
prize at 15. His play Sexo,
vilência e Walt Disney was translated
into English and performed in Germany. His plays have been
performed at the Teatro Independente de Loures, Teatro
Universitário do Minho and the Companhia de Teatro Tulipa
of Lisbon. There have been unauthorized performances in the
United States, as well as authorized ones in Pakistan and
Thailand. Poetry by this author has been included in
anthologies published in the United States and England.
