The author of these mini-essays was born in Luanda, 1948. A journalist, he has worked for the Diário popular, O jornal, and Público, and at the time this book appeared was principle editor of the weekly Sábado. He has received various prizes for journalism, such as the Prémio Fernando Pessoa in 1990, the Prémio de Reportagem of the Fundação Luso-Americana (twice), Jornalista do Ano, awarded by the Casa de Imprensa in 1995, and the Prémio de Jornalista do Ano, awarded by the Clube de Jornalistas do Porto in 1996. Ferreira Fernandes has published two books previous to this one.

A poet, essayist, literary critic, and translator, born in Porto in 1928, Fernando Guimarães has published at least seven volumes of poetry, and ten volumes of essays. He has edited at least five volumes, including poetry, fiction, and essays, and has translated poems of Byron, Shelley, Keats, Hugo von Hofmannstal, Dylan Thomas, and Elaine Feinstein. He has been most active both as an editor and as a contributor to literary reviews. Maria Lamas, born in Torres Novas, went with her husband to live in Luanda at age 18. At age 25, with two daughters, she divorced and returned to Portugal, initiating a career in journalism. In 1945 she became active in politics (as a militant Communist), participating in the founding of M.U.D. and being elected President of the Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas. Political and social activities sent her to prison several times in 1962; finally she was exiled to Paris for seven years. See Virgínia de Carvalho Nunes in Biblos, II, 1339-40. Eugenio Monteiro Ferreira was born in Luanda, 1949. He has published a volume of poems, and As ideias de kimamuenho (1989)

Lourenço's recent translation of Homer's Odyssey has been acclaimed by specialists and critics. Born in Lisbon in 1963, Lourenço spent his childhood in Oxford. Since 1990 he has been a member of the corpo docente of the Faculdade de Letras, Universidade de Lisboa. He has translated Hipólito and Ion, and has published literary criticism in the reviews Jounal of Hellenic Studies, Classical Quarterly, Euphrosyne, Humanitas, and Colóquio-Letras, as well as collaborating in the newspapers Independente, Expresso, and Público. The author's first three works of fiction consist of a trilogy of novels, based to a great extent on his interests in the classics and Camões. His first two "romances" in the series, Pode um desejo imenso and O curso das estrelas. were followed by À beira do mundo.

Moreover, there is no statement as to which language it was translated from. The author, born in Lisbon in 1960, has published over 30 titles since 1983, including fiction, poetry, essays, juvenile literature, and scientific works addressed to the more intelligent sectors of the general public. These essays from Morocco, written for the most part, or entirely during 1996, constitute the author's second book, posthumously published. His first, A pura verdade sobre o caso de Padre Teodorico (1998), was a work of crime fiction based on a true case. Born in Rosário, Alentejo, the author wanted to be a writer from age ten, when he read to his illiterate mother. But first he had to herd cattle, sheep and goats. He served in the army in Angola, worked in agriculture, mining, washed automobiles, then rose to become an office worker, and finally branch manager of a bank, while also acting in the theater.

He was assistant editor of the Diário de Luanda, and headed the administration of Rádio Nacional de Angola and Televisão Polular de Angola. In Portugal since 1982, he worked for Correio da manhã. In Luanda he published O alvorecer do cinema, (Círculo Universitário de Cinema, 1969). Since 1994 he has published at least nine books in Portugal, mainly on art and literary history and criticism.
