In
addition to the authors mentioned above, there are texts by
Serafim Ferreira, Urbano Tavares Rodrigues,
Baptista-Bastos, Maria João Fernandes, and Anita Nardon.
The English text, produced by ad-verbum, is serviceable,
with only the occasional awkward phrase. We are not
competent to judge the French text. On the "pintor e
desenhador neofigurativo, de feição expressionista" António
[do] Carmo, born Lisbon 1949, see Pamplona,
Dicionário
de pintores e escultores portugueses
(rev. ed.), II,

The
neo-figurative expressionist Cabo Verdean painter Kiki Lima
has had numerous individual exhibitions, in his own
country, Portugal, and throughout the world. His work has
also appeared in many collective shows. His subjects are
mostly the popular life and people of Cabo Verde. In
addition to the authors mentioned above, there are texts by
António Inverno, Elsa Rodrigues dos Santos, Reinaldo
Barros, Sandra Santos, and Kiki Lima. The English text,
translated by Ana Saldanha, reads intelligibly, if with a
certain stiffness. The Spanish text, translated by
ad-verbum, appears to be fairly well
done.

The
abstract and semi-abstract painter João António dos Santos
Justino Alves was born in Porto, 1940. He studied under
Dórdio Gomes, Júlio de Resende, Luís Demée, António Quadros
and Lagoa Henriques. Awarded various significant prizes for
his paintings, he has had individual exhibitions in Lisbon,
Bragança, Porto, Paris, Vila Real, Estoril, La Coruña, and
Amarante; his work has also appeared in numerous collective
exhibitions. See Pamplona Dicionário
de pintores e escultores portugueses
(rev. ed.), I,
77-8. The English text, translated by Isabel Alves, is
sound but a bit stiff: e.g. "To gather in book" instead of
"To gather in a book", or "A quadratura do círculo" is
given as "The quadrature of the circle" when "The squaring
of the circle" might be more
appropriate.
