Leonardo
Torriani was born in Cremona (Milan), ca. 1560. Filipe II
brought him to Spain in 1583 due to his skill as a military
engineer. The following year he was sent to the island of
Palma to study, and to plan and construct necessary
fortifications. After returning to the Court in 1586, he
was sent out again to the Canaries with the task of
planning and constructing a system of military defenses for
the archipelago. He remained there until 1593. The plates
reproduce 66 maps and plans, in full color, from a codice
in the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra.
