These essays deal with the writings of Angolan, Moçambican, and Brazilian authors of fiction such as Pepetela, Manuel Rui, Uanhenga Xito, Sousa Jamba, Mia Couto, Jorge Amado, Rubem Fonseca, as well as poets and essayists such as António Jacinto, Mário António, José Craveirinha, Luís Carlos Patraquim, Anberto da Costa e Silva, Ernesto Lara Filho, and António Candido. The author was born in Loures in 1948. He was taken to Angola aged eight months, grew up there, and became a citizen of Angola upon its independence. He was director-geral of the Jornal de Angola from 1991 to 1992. His poems have been published in Portugal: Do canto à Idade (Coimbra: Centelha, 1977); Nas barbas do bando (Lisboa: Ulmeiro, 1985). A collection of essays, Nem tudo é poesia was published in Luanda by UEA, 1987, and in a revised and augmented edition, 1989. In 1996 the Imprensa Nacional in Lisbon published an anthology of his poetry: Subscrito a giz: 60 poemas escolhidos (1972-1994).
