A substantially revised edition of one of the two major Portuguese-language encyclopedias; this is the only major Portuguese-language encyclopedia which is up-to-date. These first 28 volumes cover the letters A through Valong. The publisher said that the plan was to release 6 volumes per year until the collection would be complete in 24 volumes toward the end of the year 2001. However, based on the fact that twenty-eight volumes are now out, and "Valong" has been reached, we calculate that there may be as many as 30 volumes. As the twenty-eighth volume appeared in September of the year 2003, it is safe to say this work will not be completed before the end of 2001. Our best guess is that the final volume of the main body of text will appear in the year 2004. The original version, Verbo-Enciclopédia Luso-Brasileira de Cultura, consisted of 18 volumes published between 1963 and 1976. Three supplementary volumes were published in 1991. Each volume of the present version consists of over 700 pages (with the exception of volume 26, which has exactly 700 pages, including the preliminary and supplementary leaves), with the main body of text in double columns. To our taste there is too much information not specific to Portugal or other Portuguese-speaking countries easily found in English-language reference works as well as in other non-Portuguese references; nevertheless, this is an indispensable reference tool, especially important for its treatment of Portuguese literature, art, and other cultural developments of recent years. Contributors include many of the best Portuguese authorities. The general editor is João Bigotte Chorão.
