Lapa wrote a preface for this edition, in reality
apparently the 7th - (or is it the 8th? There is
considerable confusion on this. See Biblioteca
Nacional, Livros
portugueses de Cozinha 202-205.) The
first edition appeared in 1876. The Biblioteca Nacional
catalogue cites a 6th edition, dated 1924, and says a 7th
edition was announced in the Journal das
Damas, Lisboa 4
April 1867 [sic
-
i.e. 1967?]. Melo Lapa says the most recent edition was the
6th, published in 1947. How this can be the 5th edition is
a mystery to us, unless it is the 5th Vega edition, which
also seems unlikely, as the copyright to Melo Lapa's
preface, in which he justifies Vega's re-publication of the
work, supposedly last published in 1947, is dated 1993.
