First published April 2004, this third edition appeared in October of the same year. The publisher claims that over 15,000 copies were printed. Billed as a novel full of ferocious satire depicted with good humor, reflecting current Angolan society. Félix Ventura is a seller of false pasts. His clients are the prosperous merchants, politicians, and generals who make up the emerging Angolan middle class. What they all lack is a good history. Félix invents deluxe genealogies, happy memories, and even provides portraits of illustrious ancestors. Into this good life one night in Luanda comes a mysterious foreigner seeking an Angolan identity. José Eduardo Agualusa [Alves da Cunha], a native of Huambo (b. 1960), has resided in Luanda, Rio de Janeiro, and Lisbon, where he was working as a journalist until fairly recently. He has previously published collections of short stories, novels, a novella, and - in collaboration with his fellow journalist Fernando Semedo and photographer Elza Rocha - a work of investigative reporting on the African community of Lisbon, Lisboa Africana (1993), as well as a biographical novel about Lidia do Carmo Ferreira, the Angolan poet and historian who disappeared mysteriously in Luanda in 1992. His novel Nação crioula (1997), about a secret love between the Portuguese adventurer Carlos Fradique Mendes (whose correspondence was collected by Eça de Queiroz), and Ana Olímpia de Caminha, born a slave, who became one of the wealthiest and most powerful people in Angola, was awarded the Grande Prémio Literário RTP. In 2002 he published his novel O ano em que Zumbi tomou o rio. Catálogo de sombras, first published in October of 2003, appeared in a third edition that December. Detective novel mixing crime, love and sex with the search for hidden treasures of the Order of the Templars in the region of Tomar, an ancient relic thought to have been stolen, and secrets about the History of Portugal. The author's first novel Amor à 1 vista, went through three editions between March and April 1999. His detective novella with a comic touch, O fanático do sushi, was published in book form in 2000. Born Lisbon, 1967, the author holds an M.A. in International Relations from Columbia University. He has worked as a journalist, contributing to Independente for eleven years (1991 - 2001?), and to the Diário de notícias during 1997. From its inception in 2001 he was editor - in - chief of the review Maxmen; at the time this volume was published he was still in this post.

Luísa Beltrão was born in Lisbon, 1943.

Latest novel by this important and popular author, unanimously awarded the Grande Prémio de Romance e Novela by the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores for 2002, by a jury consisting of Américo Guerreiro de Sousa, Cristina Robalo Cordeiro, Eunice Cabral, Fernando J.B. Martinho, Joana Varela and José Correira Tavares, in a competition among 69 works by 67 different authors. First published in October of 2002, the second edition appeared later the same month, and this third edition was published that November. This fourth edition came out in April 2004. Lídia [Guerreiro] Jorge's A Costa dos murmúrios (1988) went through nine editions, with a total of well over 50,000 copies printed. She has been awarded numerous other prestigious literary prizes. The author of these two interrelated novellas is a native of Funchal. In 1966 he was an officer in the Portuguese army in Guiné; an opposition candidate for parliament in the 1969 elections, after April 25 1974 he served briefly as president of the Junta Geral do Funchal. From 1976 to 1979 he served as a deputy to the national parliament, and from 1980 to 1984 he was a deputy to the Assembleia Regional da Madeira. He has published several historical works, and one previous work of fiction.

The author, whose photograph appears on the inside flap of the front wrapper, but whose real name is not given, is said to be a native of Sendin, presently working at the Faculdade de Direito of the Universidade de Lisboa. He is said to have published various juridical works, as well as having written a play in Mirandés which was transmitted on RTP in 1975. A volume of his poetry in Mirandés appears in the present collection.

The author has published ten novels, a novella, a volume of short stories, a narrative, and two volumes of poetry over a span of 53 years. He was born in Lisbon in 1932, has lived in France, Brazil, and England, and now for many years in Barcelona, having traveled in the former Soviet Union and other countries. At one time he worked as a journalist for the BBC in London, and has practiced the same profession in Barcelona. He has translated works into Portuguese, Spanish, and Catalan.
