The
satirical journal As
Farpas was founded,
directed, edited and written solely by José Maria Eça de
Queiroz and José Duarte Ramalho Ortigão. Eça de Queiroz's
collaboration extended through Series 1, number 15
(September / October 1872), at which time he left for
Havana to take up a diplomatic post; his name, however,
continued to appear on the wrappers and the title page.
Ramalho Ortigão's contributions made him famous: "With
abundant good sense he ridiculed and undermined the foibles
and follies of Lisbon life, obstinately determined to bring
health to the minds and the bodies of his fellow -
countrymen and succeeding by his wit where a more sedate
reformer might have failed. The range of subjects covered
was very wide . . . and his skill in brief character -
sketches is remarkable" (Bell, Portuguese
literature, p. 322).
Each
issue of As
Farpas was printed in
1,500 copies, a considerable number for that time. The
wrappers show a drawing by Manuel de Macedo of the devil
Asmodeus looking through a telescope.
Ramalho
Ortigão later published his contributions to this journal
under the title As Farpas.
O País e a Sociedade Portuguesa, Lisbon 1887 -
90, in 11 volumes. Eça's contributions were published in
volumes 12 and 13 of the same series. Because of
disagreements between Ramalho and Eça, Eça soon published
his contributions again, under the title
Uma campanha alegre, Lisbon 1890 -
91, with substantial changes in content and style.
The
present version maintains the original text except for
modernization of the orthography. The first two editions
appeared in October 2004; this 3rd edition appeared in
November 2004. According to the publisher's "belt" 20,000
copies were issued in less than one month, which is a very
large number for Portugal. Maria Filomena Mónica provides
an introduction, and was the general editor of the volume.
Maria José Marinho provides notes, a "tabela onomástico"
and a glossary.

[actual
author: P. Manuel da Costa, S.J.].
Anónimo
(sec. XVIII). Arte de furtar. N.p.: Estampa,
(1970). Literatura Portuguesa - Clássicos de Bolso. 8°,
orig. prtd. wrps. 289, (1) pp., (2 ll.). ISBN: none. $15.00
The
Arte de
furtar, a curious and
amusing treatise on the noble art of lying and thieving
that became an often - reprinted classic of Portuguese
literature, first appeared with the false imprint
Amsterdam: Officina Elvizeriana [sic],
1652, but was probably printed in Lisbon ca. 1744. Although
the title page of that edition attributes the book to P.
António Vieira, it has now been shown to be the work of P.
Manuel da Costa.
